SAMSUNG Electronics Accredited for European GSM Testing

SEOUL, Korea # May 28, 2001 # The Samsung Euro Q.A. Lab has revealed that the United Kingdom Accreditation Service, which operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with the British Department of Trade and Industry, has accredited Samsung Electronics, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of mobile handsets, for the testing of GSM phones for Europe.
In the past, Samsung would have to commission an external accredited test laboratory and notified body to grant full type approval against European standards before the company could sell GSM handsets in Europe. Now, the company can perform the majority of the testing itself, covering electromagnetic compatibility and GSM telecommunications categories stipulated by the R&TTE Directive.
The ability to perform the testing process in-house shortens delivery time and cuts costs, which boosts product competitiveness. Samsung Euro Q.A. Lab has thus become the first Korean company to obtain accreditation for European GSM testing after gained accreditation for European electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing in 1998 and becoming an EMC competent Body in 2001. Samsung is the first handset manufacturer in the world to gain UKAS accreditation for GSM testing. It is expected that the accreditation will allow Samsung to directly compete with Europe’s leading GSM handset companies.
The accreditation covers second-generation GSM phones and the 2.5-generation GPRS handsets. However, Samsung plans to extend the scope of accreditation to include wideband CDMA products, which will emerge as the third-generation standard. This will enable the company to test its own products for all countries that use GSM.
