SAMSUNG Electronics Begins to Ascents to the World's Big 3 Wireless Handset Manufacturer

The company advances into the global TDMA handset market SEOUL, Korea - June 11, 2001 : Samsung Electronics is now aggressively going after overseas markets for all three of the mobile phone formats (CDMA, GSM and TDMA) in a bid to break into the ranks of the world's "Big 3" handset manufacturers. The company has acquired ample technology and marketing skills related to the CDMA and GSM handset lines, and now this know-how is being applied to make inroads into the massive TDMA handset market.

President Ki Tae Lee of Information & Communications Business and other Samsung officials attended a ceremony at the Gumi plant on June 11 to mark the company's first shipment of TDMA handsets. The company plans to sell some 2 million units a year in the world's major TDMA markets in the Middle East and the Americas Mexico and Brazil in particular.

Only a limited number of handset manufacturers such as Nokia, Motorola and Ericsson currently produce TDMA handsets, and Samsung is the first Korean company to break into this market. The company's officials expect their latest move to strengthen the company's hold in the world handset market, which consists of three segments: TDMA (10%), CDMA (about 15%) and GSM.

By entering into TDMA handset production, Samsung Electronics can diversify its marketing efforts according to changes in specific regional markets. According to President Lee, "By expanding into TDMA, we have solidified our position as a comprehensive handset maker. At the same time, we have set the stage for Samsung Electronics to join the ranks of the world's top three handset makers."
Samsung's initial TDMA handset (model: STH-N275) is a only 17mm thick and weighs just 93g. The slim and light design, which has been so popular with the company's CDMA and GSM models, is expected to be a powerful selling point in the TDMA market as well.

The latest TDMA mobile phone is loaded with distinctive features. It comes with a
5-line LCD as well as voice memo, games and other functions that cannot be found on competing TDMA models.
Samsung Electronics, now the world's fifth-largest mobile phone maker, aims to move up to the number three spot by aggressively addressing the specific needs of each region.
