SAMSUNG Electronics Enters Internet Phone Market

SEOUL, Korea June 28, 2001 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has applied advanced information technology to a regular phone to develop an Internet phone (model: ITP-100) that is connected to high-speed online networks (LAN, ADSL modem, etc.) to make and receive phone call as well as send and receive other data. By using Internet, long-distance and international phone calls can be made at local call rates, saving the user up to 70% on phone bills. The VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) function enables the transmission of both voice and data on one line. The Internet phone is becoming more popular among corporate users.

Samsung Electronics completed an Internet phone supply agreement with Lucent Technologies in order to break into the US market. In May of this year, Samsung Electronics completed an adaptation test of the ITP-100 at AG Communication Systems. Trial service will begin in August, and the company expects to begin commercial shipping to the North American market in September.

At least 20% of the world's corporate telephone systems are expected to switch over to Internet phones based on Internet Protocol. As a result, Samsung Electronics plans to export 20,000 units to North America this year, 150,000 next year, and at least 1 million by 2004. Eventually, the company aims to capture 20% or more of the world Internet phone market.
Terminology
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
VoIP allows voice to be transmitted over IP networks. The Internet phone is a prime example of a VoIP-applied solution, which allows long-distance and international calls to be made at greatly reduced rates.
