SAMSUNG SDS and Turbo Linux to Establish Large Linux-Specific Joint Venture

Samsung SDS joins with Turbo Linux, a global leader in Linux solutions, to enter Linux market including IT infrastructure construction and Linux solutions.

Samsung SDS (CEO : Hong-Ki Kim) announced on June 20 that it has signed an agreement with Turbo Linux of the US (CEO : Paul Thomas www.turbolinux.com ) that specializes in Linux solutions to establish a joint venture firm. The business scope of the giant joint venture will span the entire Linux-based operations including systems integration, Linux solution development, marketing, consulting and overseas operations.

The joint venture will integrate Turbo Linux's specialized technology with Samsung SDS' experiences in system construction, solution development to develop Linux infrastructure and applications for large clients in the corporate and public sectors.

The joint venture is significant in that it is a preparation for the coming of the "Enterprise Linux," with anticipated developments of Linux servers and solutions by large hardware manufacturers such as IBM and HP. The emergence of the joint venture also signals a significant change in the domestic Linux industry.

Major business areas of the joint venture includes:

▶ Linux-based IT services such as infrastructure and system construction and maintenance for corporate and public clients; ▶ solutions business including development and marketing of various Linux applications, and ▶Linux support operations such as technical support, product certification and Linux-specific education programs

Samsung SDS overseas affiliate and Turbo Linux, US, plan to market its own solutions and enter markets in South East Asia and the Middle East, where there is a large demand for systems integration.

Regarding the joint venture, a Samsung SDS official said, "Commercial application of Linux has reached a respectable level with continued developments of applications," and added, "Focus of the Linux market will likely move to 'Enterprise Linux,' for large projects spanning the entire scope of the IT industry from application oriented market."

In addition, he added that it is significant in that the joint venture will maximize synergy to seize the "Enterprise Linux" market in its early stage.

Turbo Linux, which signed the joint venture agreement with Samsung SDS, is a corporate Linux solutions specialist from high performance Linux solutions to Linux infrastructure. With its state-of-the-art technology, it maintains strategic partnerships with global IT leaders such as IBM, Intel and HP.
