SAMSUNG SDS enters mobile SI industry

M-office market heats up. Samsung SDS (CEO Hong-Ki Kim) announced on June 28 that it is entering the mobile SI industry for M-Office system with the signing of an equity investment agreement with Miengine (www.miengine.com). Samsung SDS also said that it will jointly develop with Miengine a mobile version of its flagship EIP (Enterprise Information Portal) solution ACUBE.

Mobile SI introduces the concept of mobile to the LAN-based systems integration. It allows access to the corporate computer system with PDA or other mobile terminals without limitation of space. With the investment agreement, Samsung SDS would be able to secure the burgeoning market with Miengine's data synchronization solution, which is the key solution for mobile SI business.

Data synchronization solution optimizes the mobile system integration. It has been called a "mobile solution for mobile terminals" for its ability to allow access to various Internet services and corporate information system with mobile terminals such as the PDA and IMT-2000 terminals. This had only been possible with conventional PCs. Data synchronization solution is the core element in the construction of the M-office as it requires only 50% of the cost that would have been necessary to make corporate system into mobile. As such it has bright business prospects for applications in logistics and delivery companies whose nature of business require a lot of mobility and real time inventory and sales management.

In particular, Miengine's advantage is that it allows the PDA to download a portion of the corporate system for offline use of the Internet and intranet. This eliminates the need to be continuously logged on to the Internet or the company's network to save wireless communications cost.

In addition, the mobile terminal can access the corporate system anywhere and anytime, so it can save time as well as allowing real time information sharing to improve productivity.

The two companies plan to develop mobile version of Samsung SDS' EIP solution ACUBE for PDA and other mobile terminals, and introduce it by August. At the same time, the two companies have agreed to maintain cooperative relationship in product planning, development and customer support as well as joint marketing of various mobile solutions.

Managing Director Uoon-Shik Kang of Samsung SDS Venture Division said, "Enterprise solutions such as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), groupware, KMS (Knowledge Management System), CRM (Customer Relations Management) and SCM (Supply Chain Management) would ultimately become mobile, and this would open the age of the mobile office." Hyun-Bong Lee, CEO of Miengine said, "Demand for mobile solutions, data synchronization solutions in particular, has sharply increased recently with the spread of PDA and ahead of the IMT-2000 services. He added the problem with the domestic industry has been that it was very much dependent on foreign technology. But the recent development by Miengine would be able to replace foreign solutions in the domestic market and contribute to the price competitiveness of domestic products.

Domestic mobile SI industry has been forecasted to show about 67% growth per year to 840 billion won in 2003 from about 175 billion won last year. Miengine is the first Korean company to develop data synchronization solution. It was established in January 2000 with a capital of 1.2 billion won. It provides mobile services to such excellent reference sites as Lycos, Unitel and Winglish.
