SAMSUNG Electronics Begins Mass Production of 512Mb Flash Memory Device

SEOUL, Korea July 4, 2001 Samsung Electronics announces its new 512Mb NAND flash memory device utilizing 0.15 micron technology is entering mass-production. This product will be available in a 512Mb single-chip package, part number K9F1208U0M-YCBO/YIBO as well as a 1Gb stacked dual-die package, part number K9K1G08U0M-YCBO/YIBO. 128MB SmartMedia will also be available.

This new high-capacity part is ideal for use in data storage applications in consumer handheld products such as digital cameras, MP3 players, Palm PCs and PDAs.

The technology employs a new storage cell structure operating on a lower than normal voltage which has the beneficial effect of reducing programming time. This increases data write speeds by as much as 30%. This is especially beneficial in applications such as image writing in digital photography, allowing pictures to be taken in a faster sequence.

The device is built on existing production lines utilizing technology that requires fewer process steps. This enables Samsung to reduce manufacturing costs, increasing the competitiveness of the product. The use of the 0.15-micron technology in the production of this new chip comes just six months after the company began mass-producing NAND flash memory with 0.18-micron technology. This further accelerates the rate of cost-reduction for Samsung flash memory products.

In addition, using this new technology, Samsung plans to extend the product offering into smaller capacity products in the second half of this year This will also improve the company's cost competitiveness across the board in the global NAND Flash memory business.

The world market for NAND-type flash memory chips is estimated at US$1.2 billion in 2001 and Samsung Electronics currently holds approximately a 35% market share. According to Semico Research, the Flash memory market is expected to expand by about 98% annually to reach US$4.4 billion by 2003. This is seen as the fastest growing segment of the semiconductor industry.
