SAMSUNG Electronics Develops Fast 16M DDR SRAM

SEOUL, Korea August 23, 2001 Samsung Electronics has completed development of a 16M Double Data Rate (DDR) SRAM that operates at an industry-leading 400MHz, with a data rate of 800Mbps. The company will now aggressively go after the market for high-speed SRAMs used in large-capacity servers and workstations. This latest addition fills out the Samsung SRAM lineup, which already includes low-power chips for handheld products and middle-speed devices for networks. At the same time, it stands as testimony to Samsung's technology leadership in SRAMs.

Samsung's new 16M DDR SRAM combines high capacity and high data processing speed of 400MHz with a Flip Chip Ball Grid Array (FCBGA) package, making it well suited for server cache memories and high-performance workstations.

Unlike with conventional DRAMs and SRAMs, Samsung has applied highly sophisticated 0.18-micron logic processing, which is used with CPUs. Therefore, providing even higher data processing speeds.
The new 16M DDR SRAM operates on either 2.5 or 1.8 volts and supports High Speed TTL Logic (HSTL), a specification that allows data to be sent or received at 200MHz or faster.

Only two other companies beside Samsung are now producing top-speed DDR SRAMs, a clear indication of their advanced technological requirements. Importantly, the price fluctuation for these devices is much smaller than that for regular DRAMs or low-power SRAMs. These high-value-added chips command prices at least ten times higher than that for low-power SRAMs of the same capacity.

Samsung plans to begin mass production of the high-speed 16M DDR SRAM in the second half of this year and supply them to American manufacturers of high-capacity servers and workstations. The company aims to capture 27% the highest share of the world market for this product category by 2004.
