SAMSUNG Introduces Voice Dialing CDMA PCS Phone to FCC - Explains the Benefits of Voice Dialing for the Physically Disabled

WASHINGTON, USA - April 2, 1998 - Samsung Telecommunications America (STA) today appeared before the FCC Disability Issues Task Force to discuss the benefits of its voice dialing CDMA PCS wireless handset - the SCH-2010 - for those with physical disabilities. Now, those challenged by manual dialing can call up to 20 people, including doctors, emergency services, family members and friends, using only their voice.
"The SCH-2010 phone is a great step forward in convenience and safely for all consumers, particularly those whose physical conditions make dialing a traditional wireless phone difficult," said Pete Skarzynski, STA's vice president of wireless sales and marketing. "STA is known for bringing innovative products featuring CDMA technology to the telecommunications industry, and we're particularly pleased to be the first to market with this advanced voice technology feature."

To activate voice dialing, users manually pre-program up to 20 phone numbers and corresponding voice prompts. With the phone activated, users can easily initiate calls by using the active flip feature and saying a pre-programmed name into the handset.

The SCH-2010 will be available during the second quarter of 1998. In addition to voice dialing, the handset features voice memory capabilities, allowing users to tape a personal message or record a conversation. The phone also features a vibrator alert for incoming calls and data and additional standard features such as short messaging service and caller ID.

The SCH-2010 weighs in at only 4.9 oz. And is less than five inches long. The unit has a five-line display, a removable flip, and an optional hands-free car kit. With a standard lithium ion battery, it has talk time up to 2.5 hours and standby time up to 35 hours. With an extended lithium ion battery, the handset has up to 4 hours of talk time and up to 55 hours of standby time.

The voice dialing feature will also be available on Samsung's other CDMA cellular as well as PCS products.
