Samsung Electronics Unveils Core Chip for Next-generation Mobile Phones

SEOUL, Korea September 3, 2001 Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has localized the production of phase-locked loop (PLL) IC, a core component that is loaded into IMT-2000 handsets to generate a local oscillation signal. The company plans to supply its new device to both the domestic and overseas markets.

Samsung's new PLL ICs (models: S1M8836 and S1M8837) are required for producing channel frequencies for mobile phones. As such, they are a core component for third-generation IMT-2000 handsets.

Korean makers have been entirely dependent upon importing the PLL ICs for IMT-2000, the next generation telecommunications standard, because of the intricate technology required for use in very high frequencies. By producing this device locally, Samsung has helped to boost the competitiveness of Korean-made handsets while demonstrating the superiority of the company's CDMA technology.

Samsung has adopted fractional-N technology to the PLL ICs (S1M8836 and S1M8837), allowing them to operate on fractional ratios instead of the integer ratio of PLL ICs developed by Samsung in 1996. As a result, the new devices can work faster and operate in the broader loop bandwidth.

Importantly, Samsung has applied its patented Sigma-Delta Modulator architecture so that the frequency is processed digitally, eliminating the noise generated by fractional-N block. PLL makers have been competing fiercely to find ways to cope with this fractional noise problem.

Samsung has used the Quad Flat Non-leaded (QFN) package for its new PLL ICs. This lowers the power consumption to between 5.5 and 7.5mA, extending battery life for both standby and talk modes.

The global mobile PLL IC market is estimated to be worth around US$200 million this year, and is expected to jump to US$290 million by 2003. Samsung expects to sum up at least US$100 million in sales over the next three years.

Samsung Electronics aims to be among the world's top ten makers of system LSI devices by 2005. Therefore, resources are being focused on developing this business segment, and the company will cultivate its new PLL IC as a key part of its system-on-a-chip (SOC) lineup for telecommunications applications. Samsung will aggressively market its PLL ICs for IMT-2000 handsets and plans to enforce the marketing in the GSM market by 2003.

Phase Locked Loop (PLL)
The PLL is an electronic circuit that controls an oscillator so that it maintains a constant phase relative to a reference signal.

Sigma-Delta Modulator (SDM)
A Sigma-Delta Modulator is a circuit that transforms an analog input signal into a digital output signal, creating a fractional divide ratio. The SDM operates digitally, so it is not affected by changes in external factors, ensuring stable operation and solving fractional noise problem.
