SAMSUNG Electronics Now Mass-producing 16Mb Smart Card Chips

SEOUL, Korea - September 13, 2001 - Samsung Electronics, has begun mass-producing its new multi-application smart card chip with a 16-bit CalmRISC CPU developed exclusively in-house.
The versatile device has a large-capacity built-in memory that can include a 32KB EEPROM, 64KB EEPROM, 128KB ROM or 4KB RAM.
It can be used for data storage, computation or security applications in such applications as wireless communication, financial transactions, transportation or e-commerce.

Importantly, Samsung's new device can be supported by MULTOS or the JAVA open platform, core smart card chip technologies that have recently a great deal of attention in global markets. An onboard chip operating system (COS) accommodates multiple specifications to satisfy end-user requirements.

The Data Encryption Standard (DES), the most widely used encryption algorithm, exists inside the hardware to encode the data sent between the smart card and the smart card reader. Thus, the speed is around 10,000 times faster than using DES software, making this device well suited for a wide range of applications in the rapidly growing area of encryption systems.

Samsung Electronics already produces smart card chips with a built-in 8-bit CPU and 32-bit CPU.
Now, the company is coming out with a version with a 16-bit CPU, offering buyers a full lineup to choose from.

Samsung Electronics has been developing, producing and marketing smart card chips since the mid-1990s.
The company completed development of the world's first smart card chip with 32-bit ARM CPU in 1999.
Last year, the company emerged as the top seller of JAVA-based 32-bit SIM cards for telecommunication applications.

Samsung is building upon the technology gained as the world's foremost memory chip maker to develop next-generation smart card chips with greater memory capacity and more advanced security capabilities.
The company aims to lead the world smart card chip market by 2005.

Market watcher DataQuest estimates the smart card chip market to be worth US$1.3 billion this year and to grow an average of 30% per annum, reaching around US$3.2 billion by 2004.

Terminology

?mart card: A card with a built-in chip that performs operations to suit specific applications.
The chip can include a CPU, card operating system, security (encryption) module and memory.

?CalmRISC CPU: This is a CPU developed exclusively by Samsung Electronics.

?EEPROM (Electrically erasable and Programmable PROM): A non-volatile read-only memory device that can be erased/recorded electrically.

?JAVA: A programming language and basic technology for making code used on telecommunication networks.
Independent of what software platform it is called from, JAVA can be accessed by all computers (Unix, Windows OS, Macintosh) in any environment. It can be applied to everything from smart cards to supercomputers.

?MULTOS(Multi-application Operation System): A core technology that can accept electronic currency from any country.

?DES: This data encryption standard was released by the US government in 1977.
A single encryption key encodes and decodes the information transmitted between the sender and the receiver, protecting it from being intercepted by any other party.
