The Dataquest report ranks the world's top five mobile phone makers in descending order as Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson, Samsung Electronics and Siemens. Samsung edged Siemens our for forth place in the third quarter and moved a step closer to the "big 3" makers at the top.

Samsung's rise in the global ranks can be attributed to expanding markets for CDMA handsets in Australia and the Americas as well as Samsung's inroads into the European GSM phone market since 1998.

Samsung Electronics has maintained its brand in the middle and upper end of the market price range, while marketing efforts have continued to strengthen Samsung's market position. Samsung aims to step up its marketing blitz by highlighting next-generation products such as the cdma2000-1x handsets in the US and the GPRS phones in Europe.
