SAMSUNG Electronics Unveils 1.8V Low-power 256M NAND Flash Memory

SEOUL, Korea - November 23, 2001 - Samsung Electronics has applied the 0.15-technology to produce the world's first 256Mb NAND flash memory device with 16-bit input/output pin. The device can operate on just 1.8 volts.

Samsung's new flash memory chip comes in the small chip scale package (9mm x 11mm x 0.8mm), facilitating its use in for next-generation mobile products. It also satisfies the low (1.65V - 1.95V) power requirements set for flash memory by JEDEC, (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) the international standards organization for electric and electronic products. The energy saving design cuts power consumption for more than 30% of conventional flash memory chips. As a result batteries in handheld products will last longer. Moreover, the device comes with 8-bit as well as 16-bit input/output functions, doubling data processing performance.

Recent improvements in mobile phone functions are increasing demand for memory storage capacity. Therefore, the use of high-capacity, low-cost NAND flash memory is growing quickly. Samsung Electronics offers its 256Mb NAND flash memory chip with 16-bit input /output as a stand alone product or in tandem with either a synchronous DRAM or UtRAM in a Multi Chip Package (MCP) to provide the high capacity of NAND flash memory along with the rapid random data processing performance of the SDRAM or UtRAM. Samsung Electronics is targeting its new product for 2.5G and 3G mobile phones and other next-generation mobile products capable of receiving video on demand or audio on demand services and processing video data.

Samsung Electronics also plans to offer a kit solution that includes reference design hardware and software (NAND flash driver and dedicated file system for NAND flash memory) developed to facilitate the design and application of its NAND memory products. This kit will reduce the development time needed by systems companies who are familiar with NOR flash memory.

Samsung Electronics is also expanding the availability of the 1.8V low-power, 16-bit input /output feature to its 128Mb and 1Gb flash memory devices to offer a full lineup of NAND flash memory products for mobile phones. At the same time, the company is bolstering cost competitiveness in a bid to increase its share of the memory market.
