Global Standardization for 3G Asynchronous W-CDMA

SEOUL, Korea - Nov 24, 2001 - Samsung Electronics hosted the 5-day 3GPP TSG RAN WG1 conference on Jeju Island, starting November 19. The expected outcome includes the determination of the physical hierarchy for asynchronous IMT-2000 wideband CDMA. This conference will convene some eight times in total over a one-year period.

The conference is being attended by leading Korean (Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, SK Telecom, etc.) companies as well as big names from overseas (Ericsson, Nokia, Motorola, etc.). The agenda includes discussions on the future direction for W-CDMA and on the most advanced technology in this field. Specifically, the participants specialized technology and the evolutionary progress of 3.5-generation wireless access standards such as the High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA).
Samsung engineers have given presentations on more than ten technologies, while other Korean companies have also made contributions on the subject of asynchronous IMT-2000.

The Samsung delegates included Dr. Young-Kyun Kim, leader of the Global Standards & Strategy Team and Vice Chairman at the ITU Telecommunications Sector Special Study Group. He was joined by Samsung Electronics Principal Engineer Hyeon Woo Lee, who is Vice chairman of the 3GPP TSG RAN WG1 conference.

Dr. Kim introduced preparations by equipment makers for providing a commercial W-CDMA service platform: "The wireless communications market in Korea and other nations in the Asia-Pacific is experiencing explosive growth. Commercial W-CDMA service is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2002, so thorough preparations are underway to establish stable and complete W-CDMA standards so that customers receive high quality service."

1. 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP): a body formed to set IMT-2000 standards in Europe, North America, Japan, Korea and China.

2. Technical Specification Groups (TSG): Organizations formed by the 3GPP to establish technical standards.

3. Technical Specification Group-Radio Access Network (TSG-RAN): TSG covering specifications for communications between the handset and the wireless base transceiver stations.

4. Working Groups (WG): Sub-groups tasked with duties assigned by the TSG.

5. WG1: The Working Group responsible for standardizing wireless reception and transmission technology.

6. Physical hierarchy standards: The most basic standards related to telecommunications, including frequency transmission and reception, sound conversion, modulation and demodulation.

7. High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA): Technology for greatly accelerating the packet downlinks from the base transceiver station to the handset. The current standard for 3G wireless communications is 2 megabits per second, whereas HSDPA will provide speeds of 10 megabits per second or faster.

8. International Telecommunication Union-Terminal Special Study Group IMT-2000 (ITU-T SSG IMT-2000): This body is part of the International Telecommunications Union and offers a long-term vision related to the evolution of IMT-2000 systems and other systems over the next ten years.
