SAMSUNG Provides Fast, Reliable and Flexible Wireless Communications at the Nagano Olympic Winter Games

NAGANO, Japan - February 11, 1998 - As the Worldwide Partner for Wireless Communications Equipment for the Nagano Olympic Winter Games, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is extending full support for the successful operation of the Games, and implementing a wide variety of marketing programs.
Samsung is providing the Nagano Olympic Organizing Committee (NAOC) with 13,000 wireless communications units ranging from cellular phones that feature bilingual display, high-speed data pagers to digital radios. These products, supplied in cooperation with Japan's NTT DoCoMo, have been provided to the IOC (International Olympic Committee) and NAOC officials, athletes from around the world, media as well as sponsors for efficient management of the Nagano Olympic Winter Games.

In addition, Samsung is implementing a wide range of marketing programs as an official partner for the Nagano Olympic Winter Games. As part of this effort, Samsung has launched a worldwide advertising campaign in television and print media in order to raise global awareness of its unparalleled wireless technology. In Nagano, Samsung officials participated in the Olympic torch bearing and the company has introduced "Call Home" and Hospitality programs.

Before the Games started, ten torchbearers designated by Samsung carried the Olympic Torch in ten sections within Nagano Prefecture from January 29th to February 1st. Among them, Jong-Yong Yun, president and CEO of Samsung Electronics, carried the torch in Nagano Prefecture's Ina City on January 31st.

Samsung's Call Home Program offers athletes the opportunity to call home on a mobile phone to share their special Olympic moment - whether it is the glory of winning a gold medal or those who simply want to feel closer to their loved ones when the going gets tough. All 2,450 athletes participating in the Games have been issued with a special Samsung Call Home Card, which they simply show to a member of the Samsung Call Home Team to entitle them to their free call.

The Samsung Call Home team will operate at five Olympic venues including the athlete's village and Nagano town center to ensure that the service is easily accessible to all the athletes participating in the Games. Partial services of the Call Home Program will also be offered to tourists in Nagano on designated days during the Olympics.

One of the programs Samsung has placed priority on is the Hospitality Program, where 240 Korean and overseas business partners are invited to Nagano to experience the Games first-hand. The program is held in three parts, each lasting for seven days and six nights. This program aims to reaffirm Samsung's position as the Olympic Partner to domestic and overseas dealers, and ultimately to promote Samsung products.

Samsung's sponsorship of the Olympic Games makes Korea the third country in the world to become an official Olympic Partner, following companies based in America and Japan. Only world-class companies with state-of-the-art products and technologies are designated as Olympic Partners. In providing wireless communications equipment and systems to the Nagano and Sydney Olympic Games, Samsung aims to raise the global awareness of its wireless communications equipment.
