Ventura Father Receives Olympic Gift from Daughter In New York

Gary Coltrin and daughter Annie are one of five winning pairs in the Samsung "Spirit of Sport" Contest - Ventura, Calif. (January 29, 2002) ? Annie Christenson, 28, of Ventura, Calif., was recently selected as one of the grand prize winners of Samsung "Spirit of Sport" essay contest. The contest asked entrants to submit a short essay identifying a person who motivated them to participate in sports ? and describe how that encouragement changed their life both on and off the athletic field. As part of the grand prize package, Annie wins a trip for both herself and her mentor ? father Gary ? to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

Christenson's essay described how her father used sports to bring Annie, her cousins, uncles and aunts closer together during holidays and other family occasions. Whether it was organizing Thanksgiving football games or being the loudest voice on the sidelines during youth soccer and track events, Gary's support of Annie on and off the field helped secure a father-daughter relationship that now stretches from Gary's home in California to Annie's New York City apartment. Annie's fondest memories of her father's mentoring focused on her last Olympic experience, nearly 18 years ago.

"I'll never forget sitting in the L.A. Coliseum with my father to watch Daley Thompson win the Olympic Decathlon in 1984," said Annie, a marketing executive who was recently married. "I learned that day that being an athlete and an American are things to be proud of; I also learned that a mere sporting event could move my big, strong father to tears."
"Annie and I have always shared a love of sports and it will be so exciting to share the world's greatest sports experience with her," said Gary, the Social Services Director for Ventura County. "Now that we live on opposite coasts, this will be a great chance to spend a great week together and enjoy the Olympic Winter Games."

The Samsung "Spirit of Sport" Contest ran from October 8 to November 26 of last year and was promoted nationally. A panel of Olympic and sports experts ? including Olympic gold medalists Bonnie Blair (speed skating) and Eric Bergoust (freestyle aerial skiing) ? judged the entries. The five winners and their mentors will travel to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and will be honored in a special ceremony on February 20 at the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung, a major attraction in the Salt Lake Olympic Square that showcases Samsung's expertise in digital wireless telecommunications equipment and provides fans and athletes with the opportunity to interact with the equipment and technology.
