SAMSUNG Electronics Develops Next Generation Fiber Optics

SEOUL, Korea - February 13, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has teamed up with the Kwangju Institute of Science & Technology to develop (Korea's first) wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) optical fiber for data transmission; WDM technology has recently been achieving worldwide recognition as a break through in the establishment of ultra speed communications networks.

Until now transmission through optical fiber was mainly done by time division multiplexing(TDM), which has the capability of sending data at 2.5 gigabits per second - its recent ultimate level of speed reaching 10Gbps and no more. However, with WDM technology, speed can be delivered at the rate of 20 ~ 100 Gbps. Also, when utilizing WDM, optical fiber can be simultaneously managed with TDM networks. Thus, Samsung finds WDM optical fiber a promising future market of strategic opportunity.

The world optical fiber market is estimated to be $7.5 billion in 1998, and is expected to grow rapidly, reaching $9.5 billion in 2000 and $11.5 billion by 2002. WDM optical fiber is seen as the next-generation product that will replace the TDM transmission hardware.

Samsung Electronics has applied for four domestic and overseas patents in its new business of WDM optical fiber -- recognized for its technological superiority. Samsung will mass produce and export its new optical fiber from the first quarter of this year.

Wavelength Division Multiplexing

. Both light and wavelengths exist in optical data transmission, and wave length division multiplexing is a newly developed technology that is based on a theory of Physics for keeping the two from interfering with one another.

. Unlike time division multiplexing, WDM breaks the signal according to wave length inside the optical cable, and differences in wavelength curvature ratios are utilized to transmit the data to its destination.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US $19 billion flagship company of Korean-based the Samsutng Group, is a world leader in electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries.
