SAMSUNG Electronics Posts KRW 9.9 Trillion in Sales and KRW 1.9 Trillion in Net Profit for the First Quarter

SEOUL, Korea - April 19, 2002 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced its 1st Quarter performance results on April 19, and they lived up to expectations.

The key figures released on this day include KRW 9.93 trillion in total sales, KRW 2.41 trillion in pretax income, KRW 2.1 trillion in operating income, and KRW 1.9 trillion in net income. This performance is comparable to the 3rd Quarter of 2000, when semiconductors made their largest surge ever.

Samsung Electronics' 1st Quarter sales results are 17% higher than in the 4th Quarter of 2001, while income skyrocketed 764% during the same period.

Samsung Electronics' strong performance was boosted by a relatively high operating income of KRW 990 billion from the Device Solution Network (semiconductor sector), which has recovered from a protracted slump. Telecommunication Network (Information & telecommunications sector) maintained last year's amazing turnaround, showing steady growth to reach KRW 800 billion in operating income. Operating income for Digital Media Network (digital media sector), which includes DVD players, computers and digital TVs, came to KRW 200 billion, while operating income from refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines and other home appliances totaled KRW 100 billion. Thus, all four of the company's mainstay business lines grew and were profitable.

Samsung Electronics is the world's most competitive in the areas of digital convergence. A breakdown of sales results for this sector reveals KRW 2.97 trillion for Device Solution Network (semiconductors), KRW 2.94 trillion for Telecommunication Network (information & telecommunications), KRW 2.67 trillion for Digital Media Network (digital media), KRW 920 billion for Digital Appliance Network (home appliances), and KRW 440 billion for other items that fall within this category, including some new product lines. Operating income figures are KRW 990 billion for Device Solution Network (semiconductors), KRW 800 billion for Telecommunication Network (information & telecommunications), KRW 200 billion for Digital Media Network (digital media) and KRW 110 billion for Digital Appliance Network (home appliances).

Device Solution Network represented 29.9% of total sales, followed by Telecommunication Network (29.6%), Digital Media Network (26.8%), finally Digital Appliance Network (9.3%).

Samsung Electronics officials attribute the strong results to several factors. As referred to above, memory chip prices bottomed out last year and have rebounded. High growth has achieved for NAND flash memory devices; a supply shortage exists for LCDs, and the system LSI business has remained stable. Both sales and sales prices have increased for Samsung's mobile phones, while network sales were steady and income on those sales improved. Samsung Electronics holds the top share of the world market for LCD monitors and is the world second-largest supplier of DVD players. The value added to these product lines has increased. Demand for air conditioners and some other home appliances is peaking as well.

In addition to the improved numbers for operational activities, Samsung Electronics' fiscal indicators are world class. Total assets increased KRW 1.68 trillion, the debt-to-equity ratio was down to 36%.

At an operational briefing on April 19, Samsung Electronics officials announced plans to increase in new semiconductor and LCD production facilities by around KRW 1 trillion, reflecting the recent turnaround in the semiconductor industry.
