SAMSUNG Electronics Develops CPU for Digital TV

Seoul, Korea # April 22, 2002 -
Samsung Electronics co., Ltd. has completed development of a central processing unit (CPU) used in digital TVs, the next generation for television. Digital TV broadcasting is becoming available around the world, and digital TVs are quickly replacing the old analog models. Samsung Electronics is expected to make a major impact by localizing digital TV CPU production and making inroads into this business sector.

Samsung’s new CPU is built on the ARM 920T core, which represents some of the world’s best core CPU technology. The device operates at 200MHz and transmits data at 100MHz, the top performance by any digital TV CPU available today.

Importantly, Samsung Electronics has applied sophisticated system-on-a-chip (SOC) technology to build into the CPU various peripheral functions required by next-generation digital products such as memory, data input/output, data transceiver lines, and microcomputer. As a result, the chipset can be simplified while price competitiveness is boosted about 80%.

Development of the digital TV CPU is part of a strategic project being jointly carried out simultaneously by various business divisions within the company to come up with next-generation chipsets. Each of these divisions boasts excellent technical expertise for its respective field. The new CPU is seen as a major SOC accomplishment, bringing together core technologies related to CPUs, interfacing, and the highly sophisticated integration of flash memory and DRAMs.

Digital TVs can provide images that are 2-5 times clearer than conventional analog models. Moreover, the era of digital broadcasting will turn the TV into a medium for data transmission, Internet access, telecommunications and e-commerce. Hence, demand for digital TVs is expected to skyrocket.

Samsung officials say their new CPU will be installed initially in digital high-definition TVs and Set Top Boxes. As time goes on, the device is expected to be used in all kinds of digital products that require a high-performance CPUs.

Samsung Electronics is eyeing the Japanese market, where high-performance chipsets for digital products abound. Therefore, the company will step up its marketing efforts aimed at Japan.

Samsung Electronics is scheduled to begin mass-producing the new CPU in the Second Quarter of this year. The company aims to lay the foundation for becoming a dominant player in the global next-generation CPU industry.
