SAMSUNG Bucks Korean Investment Trend and Re-affirms Commitment to UK and Irish Semiconductor Market by Opening US$2 million Automated Logistics Centre

LONDON, UK - March 4, 1998 - Samsung has dramatically re-affirmed its ongoing commitment to the UK and Irish electronics markets with the official opening of a new, fully automated logistics centre dedicated to handling the company's semiconductor products.
Representing an investment of over US$2 million, the new high-security logistics centre will help Samsung Semiconductor Europe Limited improve the efficiency and speed of its deliveries in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Products handled by the facility will include memory, microcontrollers, ASICs, power semiconductors, industrial ICs, multimedia devices and system LSI components including high-performance Alpha microprocessors. The centre also has an in-house tape and reeling operation.

The new facility is the first fully automated logistics centre to be opened in the UK by a major semiconductor manufacturer. As a result of the investment, Samsung expects to see shipping accuracy rise to 100% and improvements in retrieval efficiencies of as much as 50%. The facility has the very latest security and anti-theft systems. These systems incorporate direct links with New Scotland Yard, allowing the facility's security teams to call for Metropolitan Police armed response units if required.

Following a detailed analysis of layout, process flow and current and anticipated requirements, installation work on the new logistics centre officially began in September 1997. Based around eight storage racks, each of which is nine levels high, the facility is capable of storing in excess of 150 tons of product in over 5000 locations. Fully automated cranes, stock transfer vehicles and conveyors allow for up to 120 operations per hour and eliminate the need for operator intervention.

Commenting on the new automated logistics centre, Mr C G Shin, president of Samsung Europe, stated: "As part of our strategy to provide a world class logistics infrastructure, the new automated centre gives us significantly increased flexibility in meeting customer demands. The speed, efficiency and accuracy that the facility offers represents a significant competitive advantage and will help maintain Samsung's reputation for providing the very best levels of customer service."

Mr H M Kim, MD of Samsung Semiconductor Europe, added: "Getting the right product to the customer at the right time is absolutely critical in today's competitive semiconductor market and there is no margin for error. At the same time, the whole structure of Samsung's semiconductor business is changing as we anticipate minimum increases in units shipped of 20% for DRAM and 100% for system LSI products. The new logistics centre allows us to efficiently meet existing customer requirements, cope with anticipated growth and, if this growth continues, rapidly expand to address future demands."

Ken Jones, sales director at Samsung Semiconductor Europe stated: "Now more than ever it is vital that we demonstrate to our customers the importance that Samsung places on the UK electronics market. This major investment demonstrates our high levels of commitment and will put us ahead of the competition in terms of the delivery service that we can offer."
