SAMSUNG Electronics Joins Home Radio Frequency Group in Development of Wireless Network for the Home

SEOUL, Korea - March 5, 1998 - Due to the launch of new competitive camera models and depreciation of the Korean won against the US dollar, Samsung Aerospace Industries Ltd (SSA) expects to break its previous export records in 1998. Samsung exported cameras worth US$28 million as of the end of February, a 30% increase over the same period last year.
In addition, Samsung sealed contracts worth US $43 million at the Photo Marketing Association (PMA) show, the world's largest optical instrument exhibition recently staged in New Orleans, with Sears and Wal-Mart of the U.S. As a result, Samsung Aerospace adjusted its export targets upwards by 35% compared to 1997, and will embark on an aggressive marketing strategy to achieve this goal.

At the PMA show, the company introduced 29 products including its state-of-the-art digital PC camera and six new camera models and binoculars, which captured the interest of visitors and dealers.

The new DigimaxO digital PC camera model, which Samsung jointly developed with the semiconductor giant Intel Corp., was well received by the audience due to its superior transmission speed between the camera and PC over USB (Universal Serial Bus). Compared to similar products, Digimax was 20 times faster in transmitting photographs.

Other features of Digimax include; 768 x 576 maximum pixel resolution, support of 16.7 million colors, dual-mode operation - portable camera or digital video camera when attached to the PC via the USB, image storage on removable Flash Miniature Card (extendable up to 64MB) and built-in powerful flash.

Digimax also features an integrated CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Image Sensor that is an affordable alternative to existing image sensing devices. The image processing unit interfaces with the CMOS sensor, state-of-the-art Miniature Card and camera I/O circuits in order to perform specialized imaging tasks. Samsung's Digimax comes bundled with PC Imaging utility software that stores the images on FlashPix file format. FlashPix file format allows the images to be enhanced through the use of various PC imaging software.

A total of 640 companies, including leading Japanese manufacturers, were out to win orders from buyers attending the 74th PMA show. Samsung Aerospace expects to see changes in the camera market with more digital camera models being introduced during the year.

Samsung Aerospace Industries, Ltd. (SSA), a US$1.63 billion unit of the US$93 billion Samsung Group, is a leader in aerospace and opto-electronics. Samsung was first in the world to develop a 4-power zoom camera and has captured 7% of the world camera market. Established in 1977, Samsung Aerospace employs today over 8,500 people.
