SAMSUNG Electronics Achieves KRW 9.94 Trillion in Sales, KRW 1.92 Trillion in Net Income for the Second Quarter

SEOUL, Korea, July 19, 2002 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced its 2nd Quarter performance results on July 19, breaking a record of sales and net income for first quarter despite a sluggish marketplace.

The key second quarter statistics include total sales of KRW 9.94 trillion, pretax income of KRW 2.43 trillion, operating income of KRW 1.87 trillion and net income of KRW 1.92 trillion.

History record-breaking figures in the 2nd quarter come from balanced profits of Samsung Electronics’ DRAMs, TFT-LCD, Non-Memory Chip, and Mobile phone businesses.

The second quarter results by the sector revealed ▲ KRW 3.24 trillion in sales and KRW 1.07 trillion in net income for Device Solution Network (semiconductors), ▲ KRW 2.77 trillion in sales and KRW 610 billion in net income for Telecommunication Network (information & telecommunications), ▲ KRW 2.44 trillion in sales and KRW 150 billion in net income for Digital Media Network (digital media), and ▲ KRW 1.06 trillion in sales and KRW 90 billion in net income for Digital Appliance Network (home appliances).

The company-wide operating income ratio came to 19%. The figure for semiconductors was 33%; information & telecommunications, 22%; digital media, 6%, and home appliances, 8%.

Samsung Electronics took advantage of its strong performance to boost its financial structure, increasing cash and deposits by KRW 1.28 trillion to reach KRW 2.04 trillion. The net debt-to-equity ratio felt down to minus 16% in the second quarter from minus 7% in the first quarter, bringing the company’s overall financial structure to rank among the world’s best.

Samsung Electronics also predicted that business results of year 2002 will be record-breaking. The company’s optimism is based on bolstered product competitiveness through restructuring, a diversified income structure, soaring brand value, improved productivity and maximum emphasis on value-added products.
