SAMSUNG Electronics and Agere Systems To Develop 400 Mbps Network-DRAM(TM) Devices For Next-Generation Networks

Seoul, Korea - August 13, 2002: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the industry leader in advanced memory technology, and Agere Systems Inc. (NYSE: AGR.A, AGR.B), the world leader in communications components, today agreed to collaborate on the development of Network-DRAM™ devices which will provide network design engineers with a cost-effective solution for relieving data traffic bottlenecks in high-speed networks.

Network-DRAM is Samsung's high-speed memory technology specifically tailored for broadband networking applications such as 10-gigabit Ethernet and OC-192 synchronous optical network (SONET), which require very fast, random data access. The technology will be used with Agere's PayloadPlus@ family of programmable network processors for deep packet processing in high-speed networks. Target customers include original equipment manufacturers (OEM) of high-capacity network and telecommunications systems.

"Network-DRAM reduces latency and bus turnaround time, which are key to achieving fast random access time in today's telecommunications and networking systems," said Tom Quinn, Samsung Semiconductor, Inc.'s vice president of marketing. "We are committed to the long-term support of Network-DRAM and will work together with Agere to define specifications for future generations of Network-DRAM devices."

"The advent of memory technologies such as Network-DRAM gives system OEMs the advanced tools necessary to architect solutions that can take advantage of ever-increasing processing power and bandwidth," said Gartner semiconductor memory analyst Richard Gordon.

Network-DRAM is fully compatible with fast cycle random access memory (FCRAM), the high-speed networking memory technology jointly developed by Fujitsu and Toshiba. Samsung is currently mass-producing 256-Megabit (Mb) Network-DRAM devices. Agere recently announced similar agreements with Fujitsu and Toshiba.

"Network-DRAM is the ideal memory solution for high-speed packet processing. Our customers will reap the benefits of this technology in our integrated PayloadPlus products, such as improved performance, reduced product size and cost, and faster time-to-market," said Mark Pinto, vice president of the processing, aggregation and switching division of Agere Systems.
