SAMSUNG Electronics Ships World`s First 128M Flash Memory Samples

SEOUL, Korea - March 05, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., announced that it had completed development of the world`s first 128-megabit flash memory chips and that mass production would begin in the third quarter of this year. The new device comes just one year after Samsung succeeded in developing a 64M flash memory chip.

The world market for flash memory chips stood at US$2.6 billion in 1996, but by the year 2000, the market is expected to grow over US$5 billion a year. Thus as the first to produce samples of the 128M flash memory chip, Samsung expects to fully grow as the leader in the market -- the company aims to be exporting US$250 million worth of flash memory devices by the year 2000.

Flash memory chips are characterized by their `non-volatility,` the ability to preserve stored data even when the power source is suddenly cut off.Small and energy efficient, these devices have a wide range of applications as a memory medium in next-generation digital multimedia products. They are well suited for use in digital cameras, personal data assistants (PDAs) and other auxiliary products for computers. Flash memory chips can also be used to replace hard disc drives.

Samsung used 0.27-micron (1 micron is equal to one millionth of a meter) process technology for its new 128M flash memory chip, making it operable at a low 2.7 volts, the voltage used for mobile communications handsets.

A single 128M flash memory chip can store up to 1,050 standard newspaper pages, 120 VGA-quality pictures or 30 minutes of CD-quality voice data. With this capacity, the device can satisfy market demand for high-performance, large-memory multimedia products.

The chip can store and erase data at least one million times and can operate very quickly, providing much greater user convenience than floppy discs or other storage media.

Samsung is sending samples of its new device to computer and consumer electronics makers involved in memory cards, digital camteras, digital audio systems, small terminals, palmtop PCs and storage discs.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US $19 billion flagship company of Korean-based the Samsung Group, is a world leader in electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries.
