SAMSUNG Electronics Achieves BS7799 Security Standard

Seoul, KOREA - Oct. 10, 2002: Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the industry's leading semiconductor manufacturer, announces that it has achieved a globally recognized security standard, the British Standard 7799.
The BS7799 security standard has been presented to two of Samsung's key facilities, Giheung and Hwasung. The company aims for all its domestic semiconductor and TFT LCD facilities to meet the international standard by year's end.

Samsung is the first semiconductor company to achieve the BS7799 security standard.
Generally companies comply with the BS7799 for a single business function.
Samsung marks a new milestone as it achieves compliance in all operations, including product development, production, sales and staff organizations.

At a ceremony held at the Giheung facility on October 10 2002, Mr. Jung Gi Chun, President of British Standard Institute Korea presented Mr. Yoon Woo Lee, President & CEO of Samsung Electronics' Device Solution Network the BS7799 certificate.

"Protecting key tangible and intangible corporate information such as core technology and financial data has recently become an essential element for corporate management", said Mr. Yoon Woo Lee "Samsung's achievement of the BS7799 compliance for the operations at the Giheung and Hwasung facilities, greatly boosts our security status as well as our reliability and credibility with our customers."

Mr. Jung Gi Chun, President of British Standard Institute Korea said, "This certificate reflects the commitment of the top executives to set up an advanced security management system and the dedication of the employees that brought the system to perfection.
Samsung's secure and professional management system will ensure a more stable and strengthened business environment for its sophisticated technical advancements."

The British Standards 7799 was first introduced in 1998 after 6 years of intensive research.
This international set of standards for corporate information protection systems has been acquired by a total of 142 companies in 24 countries. All certified companies are recognized for their world-class security systems.

Samsung began an all-out effort achieve BS7799 early this year. The company reorganized and systematized various security-related elements such as setting a dedicated organization to control security management, introducing diverse solutions to each classified field such as physical security at entrances and exits, IT security for Information technology, and security training for employees understanding.

At the same time, the company moved beyond the simple and unidirectional approach that made the company itself the object of security. Rather, efforts were made to build a new-concept security system that embraces the notion of having employees at all levels assume responsibility for being possessors, managers and users of corporate information.

For a more familiar approach to the employees, Samsung introduced 'Setti', animation character based on the Jindo dog (a breed indigenous to Korea). A internet website was is operated to introduce the significance of a security conscious perspective and encourage voluntary participation in the security management.

Samsung is continuously working to implement for user-friendly measures for such voluntary and autonomous participation. ID cards will all be equipped with sophisticated smart cards by the end of this year. These cards will enable an improved physical access control system for greater employee convenience.

Companies around the world have recently become keenly interested in the management of information assets between themselves and their client firms. Security certification is now required when carrying out business transactions. The semiconductor industry is now experiencing an invisible war over technology acquisition, and compliance with internationally accepted security standards is now the key to customer satisfaction and credible business relations among corporate partners.

Samsung Electronics plans to expand its BS7799 certification, which now covers the Giheung and Hwasung facilities, to include all domestic operations by the end of this year.
