SAMSUNG Electronics Supplies IP Set-top Boxes to Japan

SEOUL, Korea - November 4, 2002 - The IP set-top boxes made by Samsung Electronics have been selected for the world's first IP digital broadcasting, which is being launched in Japan. Softbank Broadmedia, part of the Softbank Group, will become the world's first to launch IP digital broadcasting service in November.
The company has selected Samsung as a sole vendor to supply the set-top boxes required to receive this service.

Samsung is contracted to deliver US$30 million worth of the IP set-top boxes (model: SMT-F240) through next year. Softbank Broadmedia will install the units in Japanese homes, providing users with access to interactive video on demand and at least fifteen digital broadcasting channels twenty-four hours a day.

Softbank Broadmedia is launching the IP digital broadcasting service in Tokyo first.
Next year, the service will first be expanded to the greater Tokyo area, including Saitama, Chiba and Yokohama. Then, the company plans to continue expanding nationwide, reaching Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, Kobe, Fukuoka and other major Japanese cities.

The IP digital broadcasting service is mainly targeted at households that subscribe to ADSL service provided by Yahoo BB, a high-speed telecommunications operator in Japan.
The future growth of IP digital broadcasting is forecast to be huge, and Samsung expects to export more IP set-top boxes to Japan next year.

Soft Bank Broadmedia utilizes IP multi-cast technology to transmit and receive various data over the Internet. The broadcasting service is expected to operate at 2-4Mbps.

In addition to Japan, Samsung Electronics is negotiating IP set-top box export contracts with companies in other Asian countries as well as in Germany and Sweden.
