SAMSUNG Electronics Breaks 5 Million Mark in LCD Monitor Sales for the Year

Seoul Korea December 5, 2002--Use of TFT-LCDs is rapidly expanding from notebook PCs to monitors. Amid this trend, Samsung Electronics has become the world's first to break the five million mark in annual TFT-LCD sales.

On December 4, Samsung Electronics revealed this year's TFT-LCD monitor sales through November. The company has maintained its world market leadership by selling 5 million TFT-LCDs through the first eleven months of this year, a figure that is twice the 2.5 million units sold in all of last year.

Five million units represent more than 20% of the world market, a highly significant statistic considering the soaring growth of this product segment. Display Search predicts world demand for TFT-LCD monitors will increase from 26.7 million units this year to 36.2 million units by 2005.

TFT-LCD applications continue to expand, from notebook PCs to digital TVs, 3G cellular phones with motion picture capability and monitors. Samsung's sales of more than 5 million TFT-LCD monitors a year strengthens its TFT-LCD leadership position and bolsters in-house synergy in many rapidly growing areas related to TFT-LCDs.

A new, ultra-slim LCD monitor concept (models: 155T and 175T), which can be folded up and carried around easily, accounts for 30% of Samsung's total LCD monitor sales. This product is only 20.3mm thick and the design allows it to be hung on the wall with the stand still attached. The excellence of the design has earned the product numerous awards by leading industry journals worldwide.

Samsung's ultra-slim LCD monitor was selected as the "Best Product of the Year" in the monitor category in December issue of the US publication PC World. Meanwhile, PC Magazine (US) named it a "Best Buy," while ASCII (Japan) conferred the "Editor's Choice" appellation on the product.

Meanwhile, Samsung's 175P and 155P LCD monitors were jointly designed with the world-class design specialist F.A. Porsche, raising the stature of the company's monitor lineup. Samsung's latest model, the 195T, has also bee well received. It features a minimized LCD frame width to better accommodate work environments with limited space such as at financial institutions.

Samsung Electronics LCD Monitor Product Manager Jai Hoon Kim explains, "Our technological expertise, diverse product lineup for accommodating various consumer needs and aggressive marketing activities in major world markets are all factors that have allowed us to maintain our top ranking in the world LCD monitor market."
