SAMSUNG Heavy Industries, receives orders for 15 ships including world's largest container vessels

Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. recently received orders for a total of 15 ships (with 7 of them optional), including 11 tankers and 4 container vessels, worth $714,000,000 from BP Shipping Ltd. of the United Kingdom, DUNYA Denizcilik ve Ticaret A.S. of Turkey, and OOCL (Orient Overseas Container Line Ltd.) of Hong Kong.

The tankers ordered by BP Shipping Ltd. and DUNYA are in the AFRA(Average Freight Rate Assessment) MAX class with a capacity of 115,000 tons.
As they are scheduled to be delivered one after another by the first half of 2005, Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. has secured a stable quantity of work that will last the company about 2 and a half years down the line.

BP Shipping, one of the largest oil majors, has ordered a total of 18 ships from Samsung since 1995 including the current order, and it ordered from Samsung diverse types of ships ranging from 115,000ton-class tankers to VLCC's (very large crude-oil carriers: 305,000-ton class) and LNG carriers.
On the other hand, DUNYA is the first Turkish maritime shipping company to order large ships from a Korean shipbuilder, and as this company is expected to expand its fleet, Samsung expects more orders from DUNYA.

Since the year 2000, Samsung has received successive orders for 8 units of 7,400 TEU-class from Hong Kong's OOCL, thereby opening the age of super-large container vessels.
As the container ship ordered this time can carry more than 7,700TEU, it is now the largest container vessel ever ordered. This ship will be powered by a top-performance 93,000 h.p. engine.
