New Product Launches Propel SAMSUNG's Digital Convergence Leadership At iCES 2003

Las Vegas, January 9, 2003 - Expanding its digital convergence leadership, Samsung Electronics today unveils innovative new products at the international Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2003) in Las Vegas.

Samsung Electronics' products are blurring technological boundaries and creating new product categories, making the concept of digital convergence a reality in order to maximize the customer's freedom from the limits of time, space and location. Due to strength of Samsung Electronics' product design and concepts, the company will be honored as a recipient of the 2003 Innovations Awards during the trade show.

Samsung's new products reemphasize the company's commitment to bringing the power of digital technology to users with a variety of interests, needs and budgets. The Samsung products introduced in iCES 2003 include:

54 inch TFT LCD TV: Samsung's groundbreaking 54 inch TFT LCD TV is a technological marvel. Not only it is the largest TFT LCD TV ever, but also it is capable of displaying HD contents to its fullest glory. Its screen, with its 6.22 million pixels, can display 16.7 million colors at 1920 x 1080 resolution. Less than 12ms response time ensures smooth motion picture performance.

SCD5000: Samsung's new SCD5000 fulfills many enthusiasts' wishes; a full featured digital camcorder and a 4.13 mega pixel digital still camera in one compact unit. Unlike other digital camcorders with still picture capability or digital still camcorders with motion video capabilities, SCD5000 features uncompromising functionality as both. When recording digital video, it does so with 680K CCD powered resolution. When taking digital still pictures, SCD5000 gives users 4.13 mega-pixel resolution at 2272 X 1704 pixels.

HDD Digital Camcorder ITCAM-7: The world's first HDD-based digital camcorder with a myriad of entertainment capabilities. Instead of using magnetic tape, it stores video and audio on a built-in 1.5 GB hard disk drive (HDD). The footage, compressed in MPEG-4 format, transfers to computers through a USB 2.0 port. The HDD storage saves users from lengthy and cumbersome rendering and processes; capturing an hour of digital video will take only about 5 minutes instead of one hour using conventional tape-based camcorders. In addition to being a revolutionary camcorder, it also works as a portable media center, capable of playing MPEG-4 video and MP3 files.

Camera Phone SGH-V205: Perfect for conference calls and family moments, Samsung's new camera phone allows users to hear and see the person on the other end of the line. With its 100K pixel digital camera, users can send high-resolution images over the wireless network

Home Theater System HT-SK6: When two of the biggest names in home entertainment collaborate to create a home theater system, something very good is bound to happen. Samsung and Klipsch did just that, by releasing HT-SK6 home theater system. The system combines Samsung Electronics' DVD-based home theater system with progressive scan and 3:2 pull-down technology with Klipsch's award-winning Quintet Microsystem horn-loaded 2-way speakers and a 225 watt 10 powered subwoofer. The speakers, which compose world's smallest horn-loaded surround sound system, can offer excellent surround sound.

Smart Phone SPH-i500: Two unique wireless handsets also display Samsung's convergence leadership. Mobile Intelligent Terminal SPH-i500, a fully Palm-compatible, 3G enabled communication device, gives consumers the convenience of a phone, calendar, address book, and a Web browser in one convenient, easy-to-use device. And its clamshell form factor makes the design one of the most compact PDA-handset hybrids on the market today.

The most important advantage which Samsung Electronics has is its vertically-integrated infrastructure for efficient product development. Such an efficient structure is the result of Samsung's diverse and balanced product portfolio ranging from system LSI and memory chips to flat panel TVs and 3G wireless handsets. Samsung Electronics produces top-quality core components to produce top quality-set products. When a new digital convergence device is developed, the developers can take advantage of Samsung's own TFT-LCD screens, memory modules, HDDs, ODDs, and system LSIs to give births to top-notch new products efficiently.

Samsung's continued investment in R&D and design also boosts its products to another level. Even during the IT downturn, Samsung Electronics sustained commitment to R& D, investing 1.6, 2.0, and 2.6 trillion Korean Won for years 1999, 2000, and 2002 respectively.

Samsung won 5 IDEA design awards, tied for most awards won in 2002. Samsung Electronics' intensive investment in product design resulted in the establishment the Global Design Network, connecting the Corporate Design Center in Seoul and design bureaus in San Francisco, Los Angeles, London and Tokyo. Samsung Electronics' Corporate Design Center alone creates nearly 700 design concepts every year.

Samsung's leadership in the convergence revolution will keep bringing revolutionary convergence products to our customers, reshaping the future. The future is to be created by those who welcome challenge and innovation. Samsung Electronics promises to create the future of the digital world.
