American, Korean, Texan and Samsung flags flew high above the heads of 26 equestrians riding matching palominos as guests watched the beginning of the groundbreaking ceremonies. Samsung chose the theme ?Good corporate Citizen?for the day? events and demonstrated their intent by inviting more than 800 Texas dignitaries and neighbors including a nearby retirement home, Buckner Baptist Villas.

Samsung will be a major contributor to the community and a good friend to our neighbors,? said Vice Chairman K.H. Kim as part of his greeting to dignitaries and guests. ?Our managers will listen carefully to the concern of our neighbors and do our best to respond to these issues.

State Senator Gonzalo Barrientos welcomed Samsung to Austin with these words, ?On behalf of Texas we are pleased that Samsung will now call Austin home. We look forward to many years serving as your partner.

Attendees also heard more details of Samsung? plant from Sung Lee, President of Samsung Austin Semiconductor and its newly selected design firm, Lockwood Green of Seattle, Wash. Lockwood Greene will work with the Austin-based architectural firm of Graeber, Simmons & Cowan. Samsung plans to select a construction firm shortly who will work in cooperation with Samsung? own construction group. Jose Guerra of Jose Guerra Incn. will provide structural engineering services.

Samsung plans to fast-track the project by completing construction and installing equipment in the second quarter of 1997. The new plant will produce advanced semiconductor products, including 16 and 64 M DRAMs.

During the groundbreaking, Samsung officials recognized three people with special awards for their outstanding contribution to the project. Receiving recognition were : Martin DeBussman, Project Manager and site consultant for the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce; and Diana Granger, attorney for Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld.

Groundbreaking remarks also were delivered by Janet Klotz, President of the North Growth Corridor Alliance Neighborhood Association.

The traditional turning of the dirt by dignitaries and Samsung officials concluded the groundbreaking ceremonies. Guests were then treated to a Texas-style rodeo and a barbecue lunch. Entertainment during the luncheon was provided by country music star Chris Wall.

Many of those in attendance at the groundbreaking celebrated Wednesday night during an invitation-only dinner reception at the Four Season Hotel hosted by Samsung. The reception was highlighted by the exchange of gifts between Vice Chairman K.H.Kim and Mayor Bruce Todd. Samsung? gift to the city was a replica of a Kobukson ( or Turtle Ship ) built in 1591 by Admiral Yi Sun-Shin as the first iron clad war ship in the world. Mayor Bruce Todd presented the Vice Chairman with a hand-carved-pen from the Treaty Oak, an Austin landmark. Guests enjoyed entertainment from Samsung? drum and dance troupe flown in from Korea and from popular country music performer, Jerry Waker.
