SAMSUNG Ships World's First 128Mb Flash Memory Chips -- Company gets head start on next-generation Flash memory market -- Stores up to 120 VGA-Quality Pictures

AN JOSE, California, USA - April 6, 1998 - Samsung Semiconductor Inc (SSI) today announced it is shipping samples of the world's first 128-megabit (Mb) Flash memory chips and that mass production would begin in the third quarter of this year.
Sampling of the new device comes just one year after Samsung began shipping the 64Mb Flash memory chip.

Because they retain data even when power is shut off, Flash memory devices are ideal for consumer multimedia products such as digital cameras, palmtop PCs and computer storage devices. Small and energy efficient, the new 128Mb devices will be used in next-generation devices that require maximum performance and mass storage memory. For example, a single 128Mb Flash memory chip can store over 1,000 standard newspaper pages, 120 VGA-quality pictures, or 30 minutes of CD-quality voice data. In addition, the Samsung 128Mb Flash memory chip can store and erase data at least one million times.

"By succeeding in developing and mass producing the 128Mb chip just one year after developing a 64Mb chip just a year ago, Samsung has clearly secured the leading position in the world market for Flash memory intended for mass storage applications," said Zareh Samurkashian, Associate Director of Marketing. In addition, Samurkashian emphasized, "We achieved the 128Mb density based on a single-level cell design, while most other manufacturers have shifted their attention to MLC (Multi-Level Cell) design. Utilizing existing and proven technologies, we can meet the growing demand of higher density Flash for mass storage applications, today."

Analysts are forecasting the worldwide mass storage market to reach US$2.4 billion by the year 2000. "We expect to be a major player in this market segment," stated Samurkashian. "We have invested over 7 years in the NAND technology, and we are seeing consumer application markets led by digital cameras emerging very fast. Our goal is to provide higher density Flash solutions to these markets and accelerate the market development curve."

Samsung built the new Flash devices on a 0.27-micron process technology. This enables it to operate at a low 2.7 volts, which makes it ideal for battery operated consumer products as well as mobile communications devices. Samsung's architecture is optimized for security, speed and high ss data retention.

Availability

Samsung has sent samples of its new device to computer and consumer electronics makers serving such markets as memory cards, digital cameras, digital audio systems, small terminals, palmtop PCs and storage disks. Mass production is expected in the third quarter of 1998.
