SAMSUNG Electronics is releasing the popular DVD Combo Player and 40 DVD title bundle.

- Joint marketing will be conducted with 20th Century Fox and Bit One, a DVD title producer.
- The new product is expected to trigger a boom in the DVD title market.
- This year, sales of DVD players and titles are expected to surpass VCR and videotape sales.

Samsung Electronics is going after the DVD player market. Samsung has joined hands with Bit One, 20th Century Fox, Cinema Service and KBS Media to launch the Cinema Combo DVD Player, which includes a package of 40 DVD titles.

Samsung Electronics launched the world’s first combination VCR/DVD player unit in 2000, touching off a boom for this product worldwide. This latest package of combination unit and 40 DVD titles is expected to trigger a flood of DVD sales.

Executive Vice President Yu Byoung-youl, chief of the Samsung Electronics Digital Video Business Division, says, the biggest advantage of Cinema Combo is a saving of 50% on what you would pay if you purchased the player and DVD titles separately. Offering consumers this kind of package should boost the popularity of the combination VCR/DVD player.”

Bit One President Kwon Oh-hyun adds, “Our joining with Samsung Electronics, the original creator of the combination VCR/DVD player, to offer Cinema Combo will lead the popularization of DVD titles in the marketplace. We will engage in joint marketing with Samsung.”

The DVD titles in the package come in a classy album case and includes titles for the entire family. The collection includes such favorites as The Sound of Music, Minority Report and Titanic as well as study programs on DVD and high-quality nature documentaries.

Samsung’s combination VCR/DVD player has been a huge success in Korea. Sales in 2002 surged more than 250% over 2001, and demand for the combo unit was far higher than for stand alone DVD players. The Korean DVD player market is expected to be 570,000 units in 2003, surpassing the 400,000 or so VCRs that are forecast to be sold in Korea this year.
