Popularity of SAMSUNG PDP TVs Surges Over

Seoul?Korea March 26, 2003: Samsung Electronics plasma display panel (PDP) TVs, one of the main product categories in the company’s flat panel display TV lineup, are getting more attention from overseas buyers, thanks to outstanding design and superior technology. Samsung has already supplied PDP TVs to major airports in Australia and Russia and subway stations in Chile, while orders continue to flood in. As a result, the image of Samsung as a next-generation brand has risen as well.

In early March, Samsung concluded a supply contract with Vroom & Dressman (V&D), the largest department store chain in the Netherlands, for five hundred 42” PDP TVs. Some 25 million shoppers visit one of the 70 V&D outlets each week, giving tremendous public exposure to Samsung’s cutting-edge PDP imaging technology.

In addition, Samsung Electronics has supplied more than one hundred 50” PDP TVs to Moscow University, the symbol of Russian higher education. Samsung PDP TVs have been installed in the Cairo Museum, and chances are good for Samsung to further its presence in the high-end PDP TV market.
Meanwhile, Samsung PDP TVs can be found at Brisbane International Airport in Australia and Sheremetzevo International Airport in Russia. More than 1000, of the PDP TVs have been supplied to major airports in Singapore, Hong Kong, Iran, and Brazil; subway stations in Chile and China and, bus terminals in Mexico.

Dixon, the largest retailer in the UK is selling Samsung Electronics PDP TVs in its nationwide network of over 240 stores. Samsung recently signed a contract to supply Dixon with five thousand 42” units. Tie-ups are also being strengthened with major US retailers Sears and Best Buy.

Last year, Samsung Electronics made the export of flat panel TVs (PDP and LCD models) a strategic corporate goal. The company aims to dominate the next-generation TV market and operates PDP TV plants in Korea, Spain, Mexico and China. Aggressive investment has been made in sales promotion events and showroom management efforts in each national market. This effort has greatly enhanced the Samsung brand image.

Vice President Kim Young-yoon of the Samsung Electronics Visual Display Sales & marketing Team, says, “Last year, we engaged in premium marketing activities as well as “cultural marketing,” which included installing PDP TVs at the Cairo Museum and donating PDP TVs to the Karajan Foundation, a school dedicated to classical music masters. Meanwhile, Samsung Electronics has managed to build a high-end brand image from sports marketing activities and offers a solid PDP TV lineup. We now aim to use these strengths as the springboard for becoming the number one player in the world PDP TV market by 2005.”

The world PDP market totaled 550,000 units in 2002 and is predicted to show explosive growth to 1.2 million units this year and 4 million units in 2005.
