SAMSUNG Unveils 0.25-micron MDL Chip

Compared with the 0.35-micron MDL developed by Samsung last year, the new chip is 43% smaller, 40% faster (and uses 20% less power). Users can merge such logic devices as a central processing unit (CPU), digital signal processor, or control logic with the new chip.

The 0.25-micron MDL operates on just 2.5 volts, the same power provided by batteries in mobile information products. Samsung's new device incorporates all the advantages of MDL: features rapid transmission, low power consumption and reduced chip size.

Samsung plans to uses its new product in 3D graphics controllers for PCs, networks, communications products, personal digital assistants, set-top boxes and digital video disc players. The company also expects to have a 0.18-micron version completed in 1999.

MDL technology is part of the system-on-chip (SOC) design technology that is essential for next-generation semiconductors. Leading semiconductor companies around the world are focusing a great deal of attention on the MDL business. Samsung, with its front-running technology in memory devices and outstanding processing technology is aggressively leading the world MDL market.

The MDL business is expanding rapidly with the growth of graphics systems, information & communications products, networks, DVD players, set-top boxes and other multimedia products. According to Samsung, the global demand for MDL chips is expected to reach US$4.5 billion in 2000 and jump to US$8 billion in 2001.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a US $13 billion flagship company of Korean-based the Samsung Group, is a world leader in electronics, with operations in more than 60 countries.
