SAMSUNG Electronics Establishes Appliance Plant in Mexico

SEOUL, Korea – April 10, 2003 - Samsung Electronics has completed construction of a refrigerator and air conditioner plant in Queretaro, central Mexico, and now the company is taking aim at the North, Central and South American markets all at once.

Samsung Electronics constructed a plant with an annual output of 500,000 refrigerators and air conditioners in Queretaro, northwest of Mexico City. The appliances made here will not only be sold in the Mexican market but also exported to the rest of North America and Latin America.

Samsung Electronics expects that building a plant in Mexico will contribute greatly to elevating the Samsung brand to the top of this market.

This year, Samsung Electronics plans to increase sales in Mexico of high-end products such as digital TVs, side-by-side refrigerators, and monitors while expanding its market share for major product segments.

In 2002, Samsung Electronics held the top share of the Mexican market for microwave ovens, color monitors, projection TVs, and high-end mobile phones. This year, the company plans to do the same for its LCD monitors and DVD players.

Moreover, Samsung's production in Mexico plays an important role in expanding exports throughout the Americas. Samsung Electronics sold its first side-by-side refrigerators in the US last year. The company is now strengthening sales of these high-end refrigerator models as well as luxury air conditioners, front-loading washing machines, built-in appliances, LCD TVs, PDP TVs, and DVD home theaters to make Samsung the top brand in all of North America.

In 1988, Samsung Electronics completed construction of an electronics complex (SAMEX) in Tijuana, where TVs, color monitors, and mobile phones are currently being produced. Samsung Electronics Mexico (SEM), a local sales subsidiary, was established in 1995, and now the operation has been expanded to include refrigerator and air conditioner production. Eventually, SEM will be supplying products to the rest of the Americas. Samsung Electronics will also expand local production to include side-by-side refrigerators, front-loading washing machines and other high-end appliances.
