Recent Mobile WiMAX Milestones

Samsung announced in December 2010 that it has been chosen by Sprint as a key equipment and services supplier for Network Vision, the next evolution of the Sprint network. The Network Vision agreement includes plans for Samsung Mobile to deploy multi-mode base stations for Sprint spanning from the Pacific Coast to the Great Lakes including key markets such as San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Chicago and Pittsburgh. The next-generation multi-mode base stations will be deployed to enhance Sprint's usage of its 800 MHz and 1900 MHz spectrum bands and support Clearwire's nationwide build-out of Mobile WiMAX.

In addition, Samsung Mobile launched the award-winning Samsung Epic™ 4G with Sprint, the first Samsung smartphone to operate on Sprint’s 4G network. As Sprint’s first 4G wireless phone with an easy-to-use, slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Samsung Epic 4G also boasts an exceptionally thin smartphone design and a 4-inch Super AMOLED™ touchscreen display.

Samsung Mobile has been working closely with Sprint for the last three years to provide products which compliment Sprint’s build-out of 4G service compliant with the Mobile WiMAX standard. The two companies have each steadily made progress on the extensive project with key milestones including Sprint’s and Clearwire’s successful commercial launch of 4G service in 2008. Sprint’s 4G network assets were combined with Clearwire in a 2008 merger and Samsung Mobile is now one of the lead vendors who have helped Clearwire make Mobile WiMAX available to more than 110 million people in the United States in 2010.

Samsung is the global leader in delivering 3G and 4G mobile technologies and offers an end-to-end solution including chipsets, infrastructure and mobile devices. Samsung is also leveraging a market leading consumer electronics portfolio that is becoming increasingly more mobility- enabled, including access to CDMA, HSPA+, LTE and Mobile WiMAX networks.

Samsung is conducting intensive research to determine which use cases and other opportunities for 4G devices and networking will be the most attractive and beneficial to consumers in the future. Samsung has identified a handful of specific use cases that it believes will leverage the full potential of 4G to create unique and powerful user experiences.
