SAMSUNG Chairman Named "Power 50" By Hong Kong's Asia Weeks

SEOUL, Korea - For the third year in a row, Samsung Group Chairman Kun-Hee Lee has been chosen as Power 50.
Starting in 1996 and continuing in 1997 and 1998, the leading Hong Kong weekly "Asia Week" has selected and published profiles of the 50 most influential political or financial figures in Asia.

The "Asia Week" editorial staff makes the selections themselves, based on the source, duration, range, and degree of the leaders' political, economic, and moral influence.

Lee was ranked 41st this year , 45th in 1996, 39th in 1997 and is the only Korean to be chosen all three years. Other South Koreans on the list include president Kim Dae-Jung in 4th, prime minister Kim Jong-Pil in 35th, and Daewoo chairman Kim Woo-Choong in 49th. North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il was ranked 15th.

"Asia Week" in its profile of Lee, said that the Samsung chairman was not the most visible player in the South Korean corporate world, but one of the most closely watched corporate leaders and that since before the country's recent financial crisis he had zealously worked toward overcoming the outdated practices of Korea's giant conglomerates, the chaebols.
