SAMSUNG Announces 3.2GB / Disk Technology On Its Spinpoint SV Hard Drive Series

SEOUL, Korea -- Samsung Electronics' Storage Division is announcing its most advanced Hard Drive Series yet with the new SpinPoint V series featuring a high-volume 3.2GB Per Platter platform. The new series of hard drives is designed to meet desktop market demand for high-performance and high capacity. The first two entries in the SpinPoint V series are the single platter 3.2GB SV0322A and the two disk 6.4GB SV0644A. Samsung's new drives have started shipping this week.
According to Tom Judge, Samsung's Director of Hard Disk Drive Marketing, "With the surge of multimedia and gaming programs, Internet access, and storage-intensive operating systems, today's desktop users demand high performance drives for advanced product requirements. Samsung's SpinPoint V hard drives answer that demand."
John Monroe, Chief Analyst for Dataquest's rigid disk drive service said, "Samsung will become one of the first drive makers to offer 3.2GB per platter desktop technology. With the timely introduction of leading-edge designs and significant increases in its manufacturing capabilities, Samsung has taken major steps toward becoming a global force to be reckoned with in the storage industry."
"This announcement puts Samsung in a leadership position at 3.2GB/disk," states Mark Geenen, President of TrendFOCUS, a Palo Alto, CA-based market research firm. "Most HDD vendors are months away from delivery, so Samsung has taken 'time-to-volume' to another level."
Designed by Samsung, the SpinPoint V series is Samsung's fifth generation of drives with Magnetoresistive (MR) heads. Combining highly reliable technology with flexible mechanical design, MR Technology supports multiple times the capacity of normal thin film inductive heads, allowing more information to be stored on a disk.
"Samsung is clearly closing the gap with respect to areal density progress," says Crawford Del Prete, Vice President, Storage Research Group, "Samsung will be among the first to deliver 6.4GB in a two ditsk configuration."
Both SpinPoint V drives feature UltraDMA/33 that allows data to be transferred at speeds up to 33.3MB/s, double the transfer rate of older technology drives. Additionally, both drives feature a fast spindle speed of 5,400 rpm and achieve a maximum data rate of 173 Mbits per second.
Samsung's SpinPoint V drives feature a superior 512KB Segmented Read/Write Cache Buffer, which allows users the ability to transfer more of the specific information they need from hard disk to memory.
Fast ATA-4 performance is accomplished via PIO Mode 4, and Multi-Word DMA Mode 2. Both high-reliability drives achieve an MTBF rating of 500,000 hours and feature a rugged 10Gs of operating shock.
