SAMSUNG Electronics Exports Digital Set-top Boxes for Multimedia Service

SEOUL, Korea - August, 13, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., recently finalized an agreement with Telus Co. of Canada to supply 1,100 digital set-top boxes for multimedia service in two shipments by coming September. These digital set-top boxes are terminals that connect to Fiber To The Curb (FTTC) networks, used in densely populated areas. They are designed to provide a convergence of broadcasting, communications and computer services to the home, including high-speed internet access, digital broadcasts, home shopping and video on demand (VOD).

Telus Co., Canada's 3rd telephone service provider, is launching with government the trial wide-area multimedia services to 3,400 households in Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta until next year. If the trial services proved to be successful then plans call for making the services available to 120,000 households starting in 1999.

In 1995 and 1996, Samsung Electronics supplied sample set-top boxes to the US, Italy, Israel, and Spain after completing trial service of the Socio-cultural Welfare Advanced Network (SWAN) and VOD service for Korea Telecom. Those samples have been extensively tested and have proven to be of outstanding quality.

This shipment to Telus is expected to pave the way for Samsung Electronics to being full-scale exports of its digital multimedia set-top boxes to the US in 1999. To strengthen its position, the company plans to enter into strategic alliances with leading communications service providers and systems manufacturers overseas. This will raise Samsung Electronics' name recognition for this product area in North America and Europe. The company also plans to invest in the development of low-cost FTTC set-top boxes as well as set-top boxes that accommodate a fusion of other communications technologies.
