SAMSUNG to Boost Image of Italy Through Sponsorship of Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay

January 20, 2005 (Milan, Italy) - Samsung, a global leader in the electronics industry, today participated in the Milan Exhibition at the Palazzo Marino where the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch was revealed for the first time. Designed by world-class Italian design company and an Official Supplier of Torino 2006, Pininfarina, the torch reflects the symbolic and historical features of the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games. Samsung is proud of its contribution in publicizing Italian heritage such as the arts, design, fashion and winter sport through its efforts as The Olympic Partner (TOP) for the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games and as a Presenting Partner of the Olympic Torch Relay.
Hosted by the Torino 2006 Organising Committee or TOROC, today's announcement was the last in a series of press conferences promoting the Torino Olympic Torch Relay, first kicking-off in Rome on December 7, 2004 followed by stops in 8 other major Italian cities. Torino 2006 will be the third Olympic Games to be held in Italy after the Cortina D'ampezzo 1956 Olympic Winter Games and the Rome 1960 Olympic Games.
On this occasion Samsung reaffirmed its commitment to making Torino 2006 a global celebration of the Olympic mind and spirit by outlining its plans to execute various global marketing activities including consumer promotions to select ‘Samsung' runners' globally and locally. Other activities include hospitality programs for its business partners, celebrities, media and consumers both from Italy and around the world. Moreover, Samsung will encourage not only public figures such as former athletes and Olympic medalists, actors, musicians and fashion leaders, but also inspirational community leaders, volunteers and people who have overcome hardships – all those who represent the Olympic spirit - to participate in the Olympic Games d uring the Torino Olympic Torch Relay.
For Athens 2004, Samsung Torchbearers from all around the world included athletes and celebrities such as Samsung's Global Athlete Ambassador Cathy Freeman (Olympic Sprinter & Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Gold Medalist, Sydney), Darren Campbell (Olympic Sprinter & ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games Gold Medalist, London), Tom Cruise (Actor, LA), Sylvester Stallone (Actor, LA), Yukio Hashi (Pop singer, Tokyo) and Olga Kabo (Actress, Moscow). Italian athletes and celebrities such as Alessio Boggiatto (Olympic swimmer), fashion designers Ora Ito and Pascal Morabito, Enzo d'Al Ò (Cartoonist) and Federica Fontana (TV sports anchor) also joined the first-ever global Torch Relay as Samsung Torchbearers when the flame visited Rome, Italy on June 28, 2004.

The Olympic Torch Relay for Torino 2006 will commence in Rome on December 8, 2005 and last until February 10, 2006 - crossing all regions and provinces of Italy and covering approximately 11,300 km of the Italian Peninsula with a total of about 10,000 Torchbearers. More than 1,900 Torchbearers among them will be selected by Samsung, a Presenting Partner of the Torino 2006 Olympic Torch Relay.
Samsung believes the Olympic Torch Relay is the global festival demonstrating the best of the values of celebration, participation, heritage and human scale and is proud to make possible this Olympic Torch Relay through Italy, a journey that will mark the beginning of celebrations of the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games which will involve the whole nation and indeed the whole world.
