Samsung Electronics introduces 3 models of yepp, digital audio devices, that can play MP3 files at the 1999 International CES held in Las Vegas, Nevada, US, from Jan. 7 to 10, 1999.
Samsung Electronics comes out with yepp, to date the worlds smallest MP3 player (58mm x 85mm x 17mm, the size of a credit card). The new product can store, organize and play back music files in MP3 which is the most popular digital music format over Internet.
Samsung's portable MP3 player 'yepp' delivers uninterrupted, CD quality sound, even when the listener is actively exercising. It can download MP3 files from the Internet or other on-line services, and then the user can compile the songs he or she wants to listen to. Moreover, yepp comes with a graphical LCD that will indicate the name of the song being played, the name of the artist, and the playing time.
Differently from other MP3 players, 'yepp' features digital FM tuner and voice recording function. The case is made of strong and light magnesium, which makes it much more resistant to external shock than other portable audio products.
yepp's distinguished feature is the adoption of Smart Media slot perfectly compatible with PC file format, which allows yepp to sotre graphics or text files as well as MP3 music files. 8MB and 16MB Smart Media is provided by the company. 32MB Smart Media will also be availbale soon. Users can expand yepp's memory optionally buying Smart Media.
Samsung's yepp is available in three models, Series D, Series B and Series E. All of them provide high quality sound, user-friendly display, and Smart Media capability.
Series E provides 16MB embedded flash memory with Smart Media slot and direct parallel portk connection with PC. It also features voice recording and telephone directory. Series B provides 24MB embedded flash memory with Smart Media slot and a docking station with PC parallel port interface and battery charging. Finally, Series D provides 40MB Flash memory (24MB embedded and 16MB SmartMedia card), digital FM radio tuner and voice recording capability. It uses a docking station with PC parallel port interface and battery charging. Series D can record external sound such as audio data from live speeches and lectures for 10 hours.
Optionally, users can be provided with a unique recording station that allows them to encode songs into MP3 format from a CD player or cassette player without having to be first connected through a PC.
According to Mr. Harald Popp, head of STUDIO Department, Fraunhofer IIS, Germany, said ";YEPP is the first product that allows consumers to record MP3 songs directly from their audio equipment, without need to use a PC first for the compression. I am happy that we could participate in this development, by providing our real-time audio coding knowhow, and I am sure YEPP will hit a big market."; Fraunhofer(http://www.iis.fhg.de/amm/) is a leading international research lab in developing advanced audio coding schemes including MP3 and AAC.
Samsung Electronics will only begin to sell the yepp and other MP3 players in the US market after receiving official approval from the RIAA. Because the company's basic position is to cooperate closely with the RIAA and with US law governing music copyrights. To get this approval, Samsung aims to work closely with the RIAA. The efforts in this regard are multi-faceted, to include Samsung's participation in the SDMI(Secure Digfital Music Initiative), led by the RIAA. The approach to other overseas markets will be the same. Samsung Electronics expects to sell around 400,000 units in 1999. That figure breaks down into 100,000 units sold domestically and 300,000 units sold overseas.
