SAMSUNG Showcases World’S First Wibro System

Base Station, Handset Demonstrate Potential, Speed of 802.16e Standard

New Orleans, March 14, 2005 – Samsung will be demonstrating, for the first time, Wireless Broadband (WiBro) products and technology at the annual Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association (CTIA) trade show this week.

In the five months since it unveiled the first WiBro demo in November 2004 in Korea, Samsung has been able to significantly reduce the size of the WiBro compartment – shrinking the equipment to a tenth of the size of the original demo. This is evidence of Samsung's extraordinary efforts toward developing products and equipment that are immediately commercially deployable.

Samsung is leading the push toward an industry standard for WiBro, hoping to speed the time-to-market for commercial availability.

Samsung intends to commercially launch WiBro high-speed data access systems and handsets in Korea next year with sector data throughput speeds of up to 30 Mbps. Samsung will utilize the experience gained from the Korean WiBro deployment to drive ongoing development of WiMax equipment for the global market, including the United States.

President & CEO Kitae Lee of the Samsung Electronics said, “Samsung continues to innovate and offer the latest technology first. Our WiBro demo will help illustrate that the 802.16e standard will truly help drive the speed and adoption of true wireless broadband around the world.”

WiBro, based on the 802.16e standard, offers true mobility, high performance, wide-area services and global standardization for wireless broadband applications.

While high data rates can currently be achieved with Wi-Fi wireless local networks (WLANs), they only offer limited coverage areas and fixed wireless access. With the 802.16e standard, wireless users can travel across large geographic areas while receiving data applications and multimedia content, at speeds up to 75 miles per hour.

The WiBro demo base station and prototype handset will be available in booth #1045, Hall B1 at CTIA Wireless 2005 , which is being held between Mar. 14 th and Mar. 16 th .
