SAMSUNG Delivers 256M DRAM Module

(SEOUL, Korea) - Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) today announced that it has shipped out samples of a 256-megabyte module, composed of nine (32Mb x 8) 256-megabit DRAM chips. The samples, which are organized as 32M x 72, have been sent to US makers of large-capacity engineering workstation systems. Other DRAM suppliers have delivered samples of single 256M DRAMs, but this is the first time samples have been completed for modules of the high-capacity chips.

Most PCs today have 16 megabytes of on-board memory. The new 256-megabyte module has sixteen times that capacity, making it well suited for such applications as workstations, HDTV and future multimedia systems. Modules made with up to 36 chips will provide a total capacity of 512 megabytes (18 chips) or even 1-gigabyte (36 chips).

The new modules, which physically fit in the space allowed for current desktop systems, make possible large-capacity memory systems with low power consumption. Thus, large systems will have significantly increased memory capacity that requires less space because of the modular packaging. This will likely translate to an overall smaller system size.

The new device uses a 0.25 micron CMOS process technology to make circuits which operates at 3.3 volts and achieve access times of 40 nanoseconds or less.

Other semiconductor makers are also developing this module, and the market for this new device is expected to begin emerging in 1998. By the year 2000, annual demand will be in the tens of millions of units; the following year, analysts predict the annual market will be for hundreds of millions, worth billions of dollars. In order to maintain itts lead in the field of next-generation DRAMs, Samsung Electronics has already started the development of full-scale production systems for the highly-integrated 256M DRAM modules.

At the end of 1994, Samsung Electronics was also the world`s first to ship samples of fully working 256M DRAM components. Now the company is in a position to supply large-capacity modules, putting Samsung in the lead for four generations of DRAMs, from 4M to 256M.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. is the world`s leading producer of semiconductor memory products and a US$ 21 billion affiliate of Samsung Group, a US$ 80 billion Korea-based conglomerate. Among the industry`s fastest growing high-quality, multinational IC manufacturers, Samsung manufactures more than 2,500 semiconductor product types across a range of categories. Its total annual semiconductor sales exceeded US$ 8 billion last year.
