SAMSUNG Invests additional W1.76 TRN in Second 7G LCD Line

Seoul , South Korea - September 5th , 2005 - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd invests an additional W1.76 trillion in its second 7G LCD production line. The additional investment is expected to ensure an on-scheduled completion of Samsung Electronics' second 7G LCD production line at its plant in Tangjeong, southeast of Seoul .
Samsung Electronics already invested over W2.37 trillion won in the first phase of the second 7G LCD production line earlier this year. Since then, Samsung completed the initial phase of the expansion project, and began installation of production facilities in August. Operation of the new production line is scheduled for April, 2006.
The 7G LCD line processes glass substrate of 1,870mm x 2,200(mm). Line 7-1 has the capacity to process 60,000 substrates a month, and Line 7-2 will have a production capacity of 90,000 substrates monthly. Production capacity of the two lines will total 150,000 glass substrates giving Samsung no.1 position in making the 40” and 46” LCD TVs an industry standard .
In August, Samsung Electronics became the first in the industry to produce 4.15 million large-size panels a month. The company has maintained its lead in the global LCD market in terms of sales volume in the past four years since 2002.
The world market for large-screen LCD TVs is expected to reach 100 million units a year by 2010. Samsung Electronics' decision to build two 7G LCD production lines is to secure a competitive position in this growing sector and maintain market leadership.
The company said, “This investment demonstrates our absolute confidence in making 40” and 46” LCD TVs an industry standard. We will also work hard at maintaining our lead in the LCD TV market.”
As the 2006 World Cup soccer games in Germany will take place in June next year, worldwide demand for large LCD TVs is expected to increase. Samsung Electronics is uniquely equipped with massive production capacity that can cope with sharp increases.
