Samsung Electronics Enters the `Combi-card` Chip Arena

Seoul, South Korea - February 12, 2000 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd has become fully engaged in the production of combination cards, an area characterized by sophisticated, next-generation technology. On February 5, the company, along with Samsung SDS Co., Ltd., invited some 200 dignitaries from the Korean government, academia and related corporate interests to a briefing on the `combi-card` chip and its operating system held at Samsung Electronics` Chang-chung Education Center in Seoul.

The `combi-card` chip conforms to next-generation IC card standards. It can be applied to a wide range of areas requiring the latest technology, including operating system security, electronic commerce systems, electronic finance systems, bus cards, subway cards and electronic wallets.

Samsung`s new `combi-card` chip is the first single chip in Korea that includes both contact and non-contact formats. Samsung succeeded in developing the new product by incorporating its technology in memory chips with that of System LSI (large-scale integration).

The `combi-card` can process the CPU (central processing unit) at much quicker rates. In addition, by including a high-capacity 8K EEPROM (Electrically Erasable and Programmable Read Only Memory) and 24K ROM (Read Only Memory) in the chipset, the range of applications is very broad.

In 1993, Samsung Electronics became the first in Korea to develop a contact card. Since then, the company has continued to expand its technology in card chips and has purchased radio frequency design technology from On Track Innovations Ltd. (Oti) of Israel. Samsung now expects the strategic importance of its System LSI business to increase rapidly, given its high growth potential.

Samsung Electronics and Samsung SDS have applied the new `combi-card` chip to systems used within the Samsung Group. Development has also been completed for a system that allows entry to subway passengers. The company now plans to strengthen its `combi-cardk` business by diversifying applications to include financial systems and traffic systems.
