SAMSUNG First to Offer Energy-Efficient Power Adapters for Wireless Phones

DALLAS (January 5, 2006) -- Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung) today announced that it is the first wireless provider to market ENERGY STAR-qualified power adapters with its wireless phones. Products that earn the ENERGY STAR use less energy, save money, and help protect the environment, according to testing by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Samsung's announcement comes at a time when Americans are acutely aware of the high cost of energy and are looking for ways to conserve. The EPA estimates that Samsung's power adapters are 35 percent more energy efficient than standard chargers. Power adapters, or chargers, are devices that convert AC power from a wall outlet into DC power used to run electronic products.

Distributing nearly 40 million ENERGY STAR-qualified power chargers in the U.S. would save enough energy to light nearly a quarter million homes or 312 million kilowatt-hours over two years, according to the EPA. This innovative, energy-saving approach to wireless accessories also will save consumers money on electric bills. In addition, the EPA estimates Samsung will prevent 446 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to removing 38,000 cars from the road, or planting 55,000 acres of trees.

"As an innovation leader, Samsung recognizes the importance of developing cutting-edge products and accessories that help protect the environment for future generations," said Peter Skarzynski, senior vice president, Samsung. "Through technology and energy efficiency, Samsung is committed to improving consumers' everyday lives."

Samsung's ENERGY STAR-qualified chargers are compatible with most Sprint and Verizon phone models, and beginning with the A920 multimedia phone in early December, Samsung phone boxes will bear the ENERGY STAR label.

"We salute Samsung's leadership in this important energy-saving initiative. By conserving energy, ENERGY STAR-qualified adapters help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution associated with the generation of electricity," said Steve Ryan, ENERGY STAR program manager at US EPA. ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program helping businesses and individuals protect the environment through superior energy efficiency.
