Samsung Electronics Introduces 3D TFT-LCD Monitor

Seoul, South Korea - April 8, 1999 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. leads the market for sophisticated monitors such as TFT-LCD models and monitors with completely flat screens. The company has also been a leader in introducing new concept monitors to the marketplace.
Now, Samsung Electronics has come out with the world's first 3D TFT-LCD monitor, a 17" product known as 3D Hyper Monitor. The new product has image depth that cannot be seen with TVs or regular 2-dimension computer monitors. The images are so true to life that the viewer has the sensation he or she is experiencing reality.

The 3D Hyper Monitor consists of a glass pane placed between two LCD panels, each reflecting half the light and providing light permeability, creating the sensation of 3-dimensions. The TFT-LCD product consumes only 70% the power required by a regular cathode ray tube (CRT) monitor, weighs just one-fifth the CRT model and takes up only half the space.

Typical TFT-LCD monitors have a narrow viewing range, so they normally can only be used by one person at a time. The user has to train his or her eyes on a single spot, which can bring on eye fatigue. By contrast, the 3D Hyper Monitor uses the light polarity of the LCD to provide 100% of the light efficiency, so there is no limit to the number of viewers using the monitor at once. The viewers simply wear film-coated glasses or goggles to complete the 3D effect.

The 3D monitor can be effectively used for many applications such as remote viewing or high precision observation of special environments (radioactive areas harmful to humans, the deep sea, outer space), areas requiring a high degree of realism (mock military maneuvers aircraft flight simulators, the medical field, virtual reality games, videoconferencing, 3D movies and so on) Samsung Electronics plans to position its new product in the multimedia game market, which has high growth potential. The company also want to cooperate with medical equipment teams at domestic university hospitals to build 3D endoscopic surgery systems.

It is also expected to serve as the "eyes" for remote-controlled robots used in disassembling nuclear reactors and in deep-sea operations. The sharp and realistic images will facilitate the operations.

The world market for 3D monitors stood at 5,000 units in 1997, doubling to 10,000 units in 1998 and is expected to 30,000 units this year. Samsung Electronics aims to export 10,000 units and sell 1,000 units in Korea in 1999.

In addition to the initial 17" model, Samsung Electronics is scheduled to have a 21" model out in the second half of this year and a 30" model available next year. The company will begin taking special orders for its new 3D Hyper Monitor from next week.

Display technology has been evolving rapidly from 2-dimensional to flat screen to 3-dimensional. The use of 3D models is expected to soar with the spread of virtual reality and 3D movies.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., with 1998 sales revenue of about 16.6 billion dollars (US), is a world leader in the electronics industry. The Korea-based firm has operations in more than 50 countries with 60,000 employees worldwide. The company consists of three main business units: Multimedia & Home Appliances, Semiconductors and Information & Telecommunications.
