Global Leadership In Mobile TV From SAMSUNG

Barcelona, Spain, February 14, 2006 : Samsung Electronics, Co., Ltd., (Samsung) today announced its global leadership in the mobile TV category by unveiling a line-up of seven handsets crossing all types of mobile broadcasting platforms –Terrestrial DMB (T-DMB), Satellite DMB (S-DMB), DVB-H and Media FLO.

Together, these various mobile broadcasting standards will bring large-volume multimedia, television and radio content directly to consumers via their mobile handset.

Samsung is at the forefront of the mobile TV revolution by providing a variety of platforms and the company is currently in talks with operators in the Europe, the United States, and China to bring mobile TV technology to the market in preparation for commercial launch of mobile TV services in 2006. Samsung has already provided commercial DMB phones in Korea, where S-DMB and T-DMB services have started and are leading the market. Samsung has live demonstrations of this technology at 3GSM.

Europe is a key market for Samsung and the unveiling of the SGH-P900, Europe’s first T-DMB (Terrestrial Digital Media Broadcasting) phone underpins Samsung’s commitment to bring mobile TV to European consumers. With its unique landscape view design, the P900 gives consumers a more ergonomic device for experiencing mobile TV. The P900 is successfully in operation as part of ongoing field trials in Germany and France. Samsung plans to launch the P900 in the second quarter of 2006 before the ‘2006 FIFA World Cup Germany’ gets underway, becoming the first handset manufacturer to handle the European T‑DMB standard which will soon be launched in Europe through various operators.

Samsung is also unveiling its newest DVB-H model, the SGH-P910, demonstrating live DVB-H technology.

In addition, the world’s first dual DMB phone (SPH-B4100), the world’s first 5 mega-pixel T-DMB phone (SCH-B380) , the world’s first mobile TV phone with 3D game function (SPH-B3200), and the world’s slimmest mobile TV phone (SCH-B340) are on show. Dual DMB phone, the B4100, enables consumers to enjoy both S-DMB and T-DMB in one handset. It also has a Picture-in-Picture (PIP) function allowing consumers to view two channels at the same time while watching S-DMB. The B380 has a unique design of swivel rotating LCD with 5 meg-pixel camera providing full advantage of terrestrial DMB service. The B3200 has a merged 3D game function with S-DMB service to enjoy mobile TV and entertainment features together. The B340 comes in 17.3mm with Satellite DMB service, motion recognition function, 2 megapixel camera and all advanced features of a handset.

Kitae Lee, president of Samsung’s Telecommunications Network Business, said: “Samsung continues to develop the premium mobile handsets that give consumers the ultimate multimedia experience and allow them to fully realize the power of mobile broadcasting.”

“Our extensive line-up of mobile TV phones at 3GSM illustrates Samsung’s success at working across multiple platforms to deliver products that can truly serve as personal multimedia portals for connected consumers.”

Notes to Editors:

1. Samsung's History in Mobile TV

Samsung was the first in the world to invent the S-DMB chipset in February 2004 and succeeded in applying the chip to the world’s first S-DMB phone, SCH-B100, in May 2004.  When the trial service for S-DMB began in January 2005, Samsung was the sole provider of the S-DMB handset (SCH-B100) until the official launch in May 2005.  Samsung has introduced five S-DMB phones (SCH-B100, SCH-B130, SCH-B200, SCH-B250, SCH-B360) to date in the Korean market and will continue to introduce more S-DMB phones.

Samsung also completed the development of its first T-DMB phone, SPH-B1200, in February 2005.  Once the T-DMB service for mobile phones begins in Korea in January 2006, Samsung is equipped for commercialization of the T-DMB phones.  Samsung is in collaboration with Germany’s T-Systems to bring T-DMB phones to the German market in preparation for World Cup 2006.
