SAMSUNG Electronics Develops the World`s First 1Gb DDR SDRAM

AUSTIN, Texas, USA - June 28, 2000 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced the successful development of the world`s first 1Gb DDR SDRAM (Double Data Rate Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory) in a press conference with members of the Korean press held at its US-based production complex, Samsung Austin Semiconductor (SAS). The 1Gb DDR SDRAM, which can process data at speeds of 350-MHz, was developed by using the 0.13-micron design rule, an industry first.

Samsung`s 1Gb DDR SDRAM is 30- to 40-percent smaller than similar devices being developed by other companies in the semiconductor industry because of the application of the 0.13-micron design rule. In addition, the 1Gb DDR has a power-conserving, low-voltage design operating at 1.8 Volts.

In order to mass-produce a 1Gb DRAM, the widely-accepted thought was that additional large-scale investments in equipment, such as 300mm. wafer production and ArF Excimer lithography equipment, had to be made. However, because the 1Gb DDR uses the same processing architecture as the 256Mb DRAM and the 0.13-micron design rule, Samsung Electronics will be able to produce 1Gb DRAM using existing KrF Excimer lithography equipment.

Furthermore, the 0.13-micron design rule can be applied to the production of 128Mb and 256Mb DRAMs, thereby improving Samsung`s cost competitiveness during periods of semiconductor price erosion.

From the year 2000, 1Gb DRAMs will be used in large-sized computers, such as mainframes, high-end servers and super computers. As the demand for higher density grows, it will also find its way into other products that require the capability to rapidly process vast amounts of data, such as video conference systems, medical systems, satellite telecommunications, HDTV and other future digital multimedia products. Samsung expects the 1Gb DRAM market to grow to US$102 billion in 2005.

Samsung Electronics Executive Vice President Chang-gyu Hwang stated, `The development of the production-readyk 1Gb DDR is significant in that we were successful in applying the 0.13-micron design rule to semiconductor production. We are now able to secure competitiveness in the conventional semiconductor area, and will be in a competitive position in the 256Mb market as well. We are planning to ship 1Gb DDR SDRAM samples to our customers by year`s end.`
