SAMSUNG Develops Ultra-High Resolution TFT-LCD

SEOUL, Korea - July 26, 1999 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. has become the first in the industry to develop a 16.5-inch thin-film-transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) with SXGA+ (Super eXtended Graphics Array-plus) resolution. Last year, Samsung was first to begin mass production of 15-inch XGA (eXtended Graphics Array) TFT-LCDs for notebook PCs. This latest offering by Samsung Electronics is not only larger, but gives a crisper picture with 1.9 times the resolution of XGA panels.

TFT-LCD resolution is determined by the number of pixels in a panel. The resolution grades are, in ascending order, VGA, SVGA, XGA, SXGA, SXGA+ and UXGA. The standard currently being used in notebook PCs is XGA (1,024 horizontal by 768 vertical pixels). A SXGA+ panel is comprised of 1,400 pixels horizontal by 1,050 pixels vertical. In addition, Samsung developed a new standard for notebook PC displays in that the SXGA+ panel's aspect ratio is at a comfortable 4:3 ratio, rather than the 5:4 ratio that is most common with SXGA panels.

At Samsung, four 16.5-inch TFT-LCDs can be produced from a single 600mm x 720mm substrate, which is already in use on the production line to manufacture four 15-inch panels. The company also plans to start up a new mass production line next year in which six TFT-LCDs can be cut from one mother glass. This development is expected to give Samsung an even stronger competitive edge.

Samsung will begin mass production of its 16.5-inch SXGA+ TFT-LCD early next year and plans to sell at least 10,000 panels per month. Currently, the mainstream TFT-LCD models are the 13.3-inch and 14.1-inch, but screens of 15 inches and larger are forecasted to be used in high-performance notebook PCs, which require higher resolution and larger screen size. With its latest product offering, Samsung will remain a step ahead of the competition and well-positioned to satisfy demand for large-sized displays by the industry's major notebook PC manufacturers.

The notebook PC market, the main application product area for TFT-LCDs, recorded a 20% increase in sales in the first half of this year over sales during the same period a year earlier. This year, at least 18 million notebooks will be sold, and next year, this figure is expected to reach 23 million units.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., with 1998 sales revenue of US$16.6 billion, is a world leader in the electronics industry. The Korean-based firm has operations in 46 countries with 42,000 employees worldwide. The company consists of three main business units: Multimedia & Home Appliances, Semiconductors and Information & Telecommunications.
