SAMSUNG Develops 450Mbps 4Mb DDR SRAM

SEOUL, Korea - August 6, 1999 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in SRAMs, has completed development of a 4Mb Double Data Rate Static Random Access Memory (DDR SRAM) with data rate of 450Mbps. Through the use of Double Data Rate technology, the SRAM can operate at data rates that are twice as fast as SRAMs using synchronous design.

The company plans to have the new device on the market in the first quarter of next year. The company intends to supply the 4Mb DDR SRAM to high-speed network equipment manufacture rs and PC manufacturers. The primary applications will reside in network hardware, such as asynchronous transfer mode switches and Ethernet hubs, and in high-performance PCs. As system architecture speeds increase, the DDR SRAM will fulfill the requirements of next-generation PC cache applications and networking buffer memory.

Samsung Electronics is managing to keep the production cost of its DDR SRAM down to the same level as synchronous SRAMs by using existing processes and eliminating the necessity for new equipment investments. This approach has kept the production cost at a minimal level.

Samsung's new 4Mb DDR SRAM can operate on just 2.5 volts power supply, as opposed to the 3.3 volts required by other SRAMs. The device data transfer interface is supported by High Speed Transceiver Logic (HSTL), a specification for electrical interface that allows data to be sent and received at speeds of 200MHz and higher.

In 1998, Samsung Electronics sold US$750 million worth of SRAMs, 20.5% of the world market. The company has held the top market share for the past four years. This year, Samsung has set its SRAM sales target at US$850 million, and the company is targeting a 23% share of the overall market.

Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., with 1998 sales revenue of US$16.6 billion, is a world leader in the electronics industry. The Korean-based firm has operations in 46 countries with 42,000 employees worldwide. The company consists of three main business units: Multimedia & Home Appliances, Semiconductors and Information & Telecommunications.
